Many of the people here likely write commercial web pages that attempt
to sell things, describe what a company does, etc. But there are many
other uses of web page such as for specialized education, personal
pages for sharing pictures, sounds, etc with friends and relatives,
etc. I guess the most important thing is to know your target audience.
If you are selling consumer products needed by most people, you need to
consider as many types of people and computers they might have as you
can. If you are selling music or videos, you often must offer samples
of your wares as bait to get people interested in the media. In that
case you will have to consider the types of media players that are
likely to be on computers of clients interested in your wares. Access
to the deaf may not be very important on a music site, and access to
the blind may not be very important on a video site. At one time, if
your target was older people in the US, you should know that many older
people had MSNTV(former WebTV) and the browser it uses is very
different from most computer browsers. Thus a medical device or prune
juice vendor would want to make certain their page views well on MSNTV
and possibly use larger text than usual. For these and many other
reasons, I doubt if there is any ideal general web page.
As much as you may hate those large flash ads that autostart and can
not be turned off, there is a school of hard sell ad people that demand
the flash ads, huge flashy banners, and much more on their sites. They
do not want to hear that you do not wish to use them, and if you give
them much lip, they likely will either try to get you fired, if you
both work at the same company, or go to another company for writing web
pages.
