You're out of luck then.
There's no way to layer some HTML over the top of content that's rendered
by a plugin. (Or rather, there is a way -- which is what you've been
trying -- but there are very few browsers that support it.)
Tell your boss that what he wants doing cannot be done. The client (who I
assume supplied the SWF, and want it to link to their site) will need to
provide an alternative SWF file with a built-in link to their site; or
supply the advert in a different format: PNG, JPEG or GIF.
