 Changed to this and it works:
 
 ..note:first-letter {
 padding-left: 30px;
 }
 
 Interestingly this appears (renders?) the same in Firefox:
 
 div.note:first-letter {
 padding-left: 30px;
 }
 
 but in IE the first letter seems to inherit .note's padding, margin,
 border properties etc.
