backticks are for evaluating a smarty variable 
expression in a double-quotish string. simple 
variables ($foo) are interpolated, but periods 
or object refs aren't. for example: 
 
"$foo.bar-baz"   means $foo.'.bar-baz' 
"`$foo.bar`-baz" means $foo['bar'].'-baz' 
 
it does the same job as curly braces in regular 
php double-quotish strings.
