is php something that apache interprets?

or does it need some other sort of "engine".

i'm trying to use a different type web server on my local machine for
testing.

simple server:www
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/sswww.htm

i know nothing about building a server and i thought this was too easy to
set up. ultimately i want to run a blog cms type site and would love to
be able to tweak it here before "going live". i did install apache but
it seems like its not tailored for ease of use. i would actually have to
(cough cough)learn stuff.
