True, but plenty of PHP-based packages started out this way and have now
advanced into quite successful beasts thanks to synergised effort from
multiple coders plus long-term experience. Hence I was after something
that I could take and improve on.

Well, I'd argue against that (see above) since I've taken Xoops,
wordpress, Btitorrent etc and improved their code in plenty of places.
Well, clarified it at least and/or tweaked it to my own requirements.
but learned a lot about how other people do things and good/bad points
of coding along the way.
