I have this book and it's a good introduction to smarty and PEAR, if
anything it acts as an intro as to the basic functions of smarty (and PEAR)

Before I read this book I wouldn't go near smarty but afterwards it gave me
confidence to take it up and explore the documentation for it.

So, if you are thinking of using smarty, or PEAR and feel intimidated by
them, give this book a go, if you have been using smarty/PEAR for a while
then don't bother getting it just for those chapters, the book does cover a
lot more and has an extensive section on XML tho, a well presented and easy
to consume read.

Ash

[posted this unintentionally offlist to Jim, reposting since no-one has
mentioned it - sorry for the repeat Jim]

I literally *just* purchased it and haven't read it yet, but you might
check out David Sklar's Essential PHP Tools, which has a good-sized
chapter on Smarty (54pp). It seems to be mostly complimentary to the docs:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1590592808

Perhaps someone on the list can offer a review/critique of said chapter...
