If the user needs to change the text size (pixels are a fixed size :),
then the most important thing becomes legibility and usability, and the
user has indicated a willingness to sacrifice some prettiness to make
the site usable. That is a valid and worthwhile trade.

I think this is not a good way to think. "Sort of mostly the same way
on similar equipment" is a better way to think. There are good reasons
why a site =should= look different on different display devices, and for
people with different desires.
The user's preferences should be paramount. Always.
