Now I see what you are saying. I was looking at it the other way around
entirely. Like, if you were a Linux show to begin with and you were
swapping the servers over to Windows. I thought you were justifying
that switch as opposed to sticking with Linux.
The OP only mentioned two systems: Linux/Apache on one and
Windows/MSSQL on the other. Personally I'd still stick with Linux on
the servers but that's just opinion in a mixed environment. If you
already have a few hundred or more WinXP clients in your network and
the labor to maintain them the TCO for a lone Linux server is higher
due to labor. On the other hand if you had a few hundred or more Linux
clients (no Windows boxes), the cost of maintaining the same lone Linux
server would be negligable since the same labor pool would be used. I
suspect that TCO in that network would be much lower than in the same
Windows network. The pitfall would be having to use Open Office, which
is a horrible application still.
I wonder how many sys admins and network admins there are out there
with high proficiency in both Windows and Linux servers. I should look
into that. :o)
