| php = cross-platform. Excel = Microsoft. No easy way to access COM
| objects with php.
i've done plenty of com work in php and have only had few occassions where
it was rough...and that would have been just as rough as with using vba.
other than that, you are *absolutely* correct, gernot! you must pick the
tool that best fits the job. excel is NOT that tool when it comes to getting
and parsing content from web pages. the only reason that functionality is
there is so that it can pull in *entire* web content in the form of
<table></table>...it can't handle any other kind of content by default (very
well)!
the best solution would be to use sql server (since he's a windows guy), hit
a page, parse it (you can even use regular expressions in sql server now),
and store it. dts packages work wonders for segmenting and scheduling the
work. there are downloadable versions of sql server 2k5 that are
"free-enough" that could be used.
then again, i assume he's not a full-time programmer since vb is preferable
to vba and wouldn't require excel's cheesy web toolbar to hit the
internet...he could use vb's cheesy web ocx's. that means he probably
doesn't have sql server either since it would seem excel is where he stores
his results.
so, your original two sentence reply is entirely correct. "can you
tounge-kiss a dog? sure you can, *but why would you*?"
cheers
