I have removed the following from the test page:
#pmenu li.current_page hover{
background: url("/images/menu-buttons.gif") no-repeat 0 0;
background-position: 0 -47px;
color:#fff; }
....but the anomaly is still there. Is there another part of the CSS
which should be removed?
