Note to self (and everyone else):
This bug is now fixed. It was not even PEAR related. After solving the
PEAR bug, the symptoms were gone on our local version, yet online the bug
kept re-appearing for a long time, until...
we finally upgraded the server, and PRESTO: the bug was gone.
Using PEAR+Smarty+Zend on a small scale server with a huge load is a
really bad idea.
anyone who has an inexplicable emalloc or malloc or other core dump on
apache should simply upgrade!
