Give Your Competition Something To Cheer About - Write A Bad Ad!

Category: Competitors Date: 2003-03-19
When you attend a formal affair you are judged by your attire. Designer jeans do not fit into this category, no matter how much you paid for them.

Anyone competing against you will love this!

When you prepare for a job interview you want to put your best foot forward. That means you hide your tatooes, comb your hair and forget you ever heard the word "ain't".

That person competing for the same job is hoping you drop a few double-negatives!

When you are invited to a pool party, showing up doused in your heaviest, most expensive perfume that will attract every bug and mosquito within a ten mile radius is a very bad move.

The women who recognize your great figure are now having a field day with your mistake!

It's all about making an impression. When you write an ad it MUST leave an excellent impression. An impression that conveys the message you know what you're talking about.

Your ad MUST make an impact. It MUST leave 'em wondering about your offer. It MUST make your competition nervous.

The reader may not make a move the first time, but if they're still thinking about it after they've put it down you've done a good job. More than likely, you've given your ad some personality.

You've put your reader in a very receptive mood for when they see your ad the next time - if they wait until next time. They may get sick of just thinking about it and go on and decide to do something about it sooner!

When you write your ads you'd be well served by putting yourself in somebody else's shoes - chiefly, the footwear of your competition.

If you are competing for the carpet market which ad will spark you into action more:

"Our Carpets Are Now On Sale at 35% Off!"
or
"Our Beautiful Carpeting Has Your Name Written All Over It. Now At 35% OFF! What's Your Favorite Color? WE HAVE IT IN STOCK!! We'll give you the home you've been dreaming of. Friendly, Quick Delivery and Installation Service!"

For the same deal (35% Off) the second ad not only ensures saving you money and experiencing a pleasant shopping trip, but it's also got you excited about nice people beautifying your home just the way you want.

Let's take another example. Say you're looking for a new veteranarian for your pet. Which ad will make you pick up a phone to schedule a visit?

"New Vet In Town. Looking For New Customers"
or
"Does your pet need some extra TLC? Newly-arrived Vet will love your pet as much as you do. Bring them in and let's all get acquainted."

Guess which doctor will be feeding "Fido" nutritional snacks?

See what I mean? Your ad is your first impression. Make it sing with hopefulness and reward. Follow those directions and you are on the right path to leaving your competition just like Avis - trying harder!
