How to write million dollar sales letters.

Category: Copy Writing - email copy Date: 2003-05-14
Regardless of what youre trying to sell, you really cant sell it without "talking" with your prospective buyer. Your sales letter, whether you send it by e-mail or post it on your site, is the medium through which you talk to your prospect.

All winning sales letters succeed because they create a desire in the mind of the reader, and provoke him to take the required action. First they set the scene by appealing to a desire or need. They then flow smoothly into the "visionary" part of the sales pitch by describing in detail how wonderful life will be and, how "good" the prospect is going to feel after hes purchased your product. This is the body or "guts" of a sales letter.

Overall, a winning sales letter follows a time-tested and proven formula: l) Attract the prospects attention; 2) Arouse his interest in what you can do for him; 3) Make him desire the benefits of your product so badly that he can not resist it any longer; and finally, 4) Demand that he take action - make him understand that he should order what you are selling without delay, because procrastination will mean that he will lose out. These four steps comprise the famous "AIDA" formula.Make no mistake, it really works!

Sales letters that pull in the most sales are almost always two to three pages in length. For really big ticket items, they will run at least four pages. Do not be afraid to write lengthy sales letters; if the interest of a prospect is aroused by what you have to say, he or she will be happy to read all your information. Be sure, therefore, to include all relevant selling points.

Theres been a great deal of discussion over the past few years regarding just how long a sales letter should be. A lot of people are asking: "Will people really take the time to read a long sales letter?" The answer is a simple and time-tested one: "Yes, indeed!" Surveys and tests over the years emphatically prove that longer sales letters pull even better than the shorter ones, so dont worry about the length of your sales letter - just make sure that it sells your product for you!

John G. Ledo

Regardless of the length of your sales letter, it should do one thing: sell, and sell hard! If you intend to close the sale, you have to do it with your sales letter. It wont do to be "wishy-washy" with a sales letter and then expect to close the sale with a color brochure or circular. The sales letter is the tool by which you convince the prospect and close the sale. Any brochure or supplementary material that you send with it can reinforce the message of your letter, but can not take its place.

The "inside secret" is to make your sales letter so interesting and "visionary", what with the "mouth-watering" benefits youre offering to the reader, that he wont be able to resist reading it all the way through. Your task is to break up the "work" of reading by using short, punchy sentences and emphasizing all important points with the use of sub-headings, indentations and even the use of a second color.

When demanding action from your readers by insisting on their order, offer something free if they order timeously. You might even clinch their response by stressing that the gift has a certain value and by setting a deadline

Probably the best advice we can give you is to TEST, TEST, TEST! Always test different sales letters to find which one brings you the most $$$$!!!
