Net Reach

Even with all the hype of the Internet as a business tool, the true impact of Net connectivity for marketing is taking on explosive proportions. In reading this email newsletter, you are taking part in the cultural shift from traditional communication like snail mail and paper memos to worldwide electronic connectivity. You may be reading this online at work, at home, in your car or while traveling, literally anywhere in the world.
The breadth of the Nets connectivity to the average consumer was brought home to me with a recent call from my grandmother. She said that she and my grandfather had just been given an old 486 machine from one of my uncles and that my grandfather was busy looking for new bowling shoes online. Only a few years ago my grandparents couldnt figure out how to work the telephone answer machine. Now theyre shopping on the Internet!
A recent study by Nielsen Media Research and CommerceNet, which aired June 18 on MSNBC, found that 92 million of North Americas 225 million people are connected to the Internet. Nearly 80 percent of them are connected at home. This shows how quickly Net access is becoming an indispensable tool and the preferred means of communication for a large segment of society.
Every demographic group is now connected. And as new technologies emerge, previous geographic limitations to connectivity are being erased. The range of Net connectivity options grows almost daily with new vendors coming online and new technologies being introduced at breakneck speeds. Almost every residential phone customer in the developed world can connect to the Internet via dial-up access. As broadband solutions such as cable-modem, DSL and satellite connectivity become more widely available and affordable, the paradigm is shifting yet again toward streamlined live interactive content.
What does this means for us as marketers? It opens the door to an unprecedented new level of contact and interaction with our customers. One-to-one marketing efforts can now become truly interactive and virtually real-time. Clearly, our society has embraced the Net as a means for communication and creation of an online community. By tapping into this community, marketers can gain access to customers quickly, affordably and accurately.
This doesnt mean the end of traditional marketing. There will always be a time and place for direct marketing within the traditional media. Some messages are simply more effective when conveyed physically rather than electronically. After all, we cant append a cool-looking keychain to an email.
At M\S Database Marketing, we feel that using electronic media within our marketing strategies is not only smart, but is also a necessary means of interaction with our customers and our clients customers. Weve found online capture and response techniques to be an effective, cost savings and results-producing means for gathering data and communicating with target audiences.
