Keeping up with the plethora of Search Engines can be a daunting task... many even do it for a living! As a busy webmaster, you may not have the time or may not even be interested in pursuing the chore so here is some tips to ease your marketing efforts.

1. BATTLE PLANS:

The first thing that you should do when you are starting your "war" with Search Engine Positioning is to write up a "battle plan". In a 3-Ring binder, set up columns for every page of your site and then include all of your sites. Many engines will accept only one page or url at a time so this will keep track all your submissions to each Search Engine. Make sure to add entry spaces for submission dates and keep track of when and where each url was submitted. You could also do this with the Microsoft Excel program.

It is also helpful to have quality content on your site such as informative articles or an active discussion board. Many Search Engines favor "theme sites" or sites that have content related to a specific topic such as ebooks or baby care. By providing a quality site for your visitors, you please both the Search Engines as well as your visitors at the same time.

2. CONSULT EXPERTS:

Next... Get informed. Before you go buy that submission software or submit your first url, visit sites that have expert advice on Search Engines. The most useful of these is http://www.searchenginewatch.com where you will find up-to-date information on the top search engines.

Two other sites that I have recently discovered are: http://www.searchengineacademy.com - $50 for 7 courses
http://www.searchenginecourse.com - soon to be released since it is being updated.

3. ARM YOURSELF:

Make sure that your META tags, alt tags, headlines, title, and content are all related for the best "artillery." An excellent list of resources on META tags is at: http://northernwebs.com/set/ along with other search engine submitting tips and a "Meta Medic" which allows you to check your META tags before you submit them. If you are absolutely not comfortable with creating your own META tags, you can visit a site like that will create them for you like http://www.metatagbuilder.com/

3. EXECUTE ORDERS:

Now, it is time to submit your site to the Search Engines. First, manually submit to the biggest engines that require only your url such as Altavista, Excite, Google, and Hotbot. Prepare your descriptions for the engines that require it as well as a list of relevant keywords for the other Search Engines and directories.

Heres a quick rundown of the most important Search Engines and directories courtesy of SearchEngineWatch.com (and some extras from my own research)

http://www.excite.com
http://www.google.com
http://search.aol.com/
http://www.hotbot.com
http://www.infoseek.com
http://www.lycos.com
http://search.msn.com
http://search.netscape.com
http://www.snap.com (NBCi)
http://www.webcrawler.com
http://www.askjeeves.com
http://www.directhit.com
http://www.alltheweb.com
http://www.go.com
http://www.goto.com - pay per click
http://www.iwon.com
http://search.msn.com
http://www.northernlight.com
http://www.raging.com (new)
DIRECTORIES:

* Yahoo.com - A very important site to be listed on. Take special care submitting to it. Check out http://www.selfpromotion.com for some useful tips on how to get submitted.

* Open Directory Project http://www.dmoz.org - Quickly becoming an important spot since many search engines use this directory as their directory listing source such as Altavista, Netscape, AOL Search, HotBot and Lycos.

* Infoseek http://www.infoseek.com - has a search engine plus a directory where you can volunteer to become a guide.

* Snap LiveDirectory - http://livedirectory.snap.com - New directory that experts recommend you submit your site to.

* About.com - Very interested in "deep" submissions or particularly useful articles you have archived on your site.

* Looksmart.com - powers some listings for MSN Search and Excite and costs $199 to get listed (with also get you listed on CNN.com, Altavista and 370 more ISPs.)

4. SEARCH FOR CASUALTIES:

Remember to make note of how long it takes each Search Engine to index your site. In the specified time, search for the site in the top search engines to see if they have been indexed as well as where your position is. If you arent listed, re-submit again (but not too often in case they think you are "spamming" them with too many submissions.)

To see how you are ranked in several search engines at once for any particular keyword... take a look at a neat metasearch engine called IXQuick at http://www.ixquick.com brought to my attention by Allan Gardyne of AssociatePrograms.com For each keyword you will have a star for each high ranking in each top search engine -- a handy reference!

5. SEND IN REINFORCEMENTS:

I have always done most of my search engine submissions manually. I honestly believe that it is more effective when done this way, however, I am starting to lean towards using submitters for several of my sites simply due to time constraints. I did come across Search Engine Commando and it seems to have some potential through customizing submission schedules - it submits one page per site per 24 hours. That may save you considerable time if you have several sites to promote at once. http://www.marketingedgetips.com/commando.html

6. WIN THE BATTLE = WIN THE WAR?

Even though you may be high in the Search Engine listings, that doesnt mean it will last forever. A good plan would be to monitor your sites listings every so often and re-submit whenever you have been dropped. In other words, just because you may have "won a single battle" it doesnt mean you have "won the war" since it is an on-going series of "battles."

That is what Search Engine Positioning is all about.
