How to Effectively Advertise by E-mail

How many sites have you found and bookmarked for later investigation and have never returned to them? Isnt your main intention for setting up a web site to gain traffic to your site and repeat exposure? Do visitors maybe bookmark your site into a vast category of other sites never to return?
What do you do to get visitors to return to your site and purchase your products or services? Maybe a gentle reminder is in order. But how do you know who your visitors are? Exposure and desire are the names of the game and require constant effort.
There are many ways to increase the traffic to your site and gain exposure. The use of E-mail can be the most advantageous tool at your disposal. Here are a few techniques I have found that are very helpful in marketing my web site.
Get your visitors E-mail address
Here are a few suggestions for retrieving the E-mail addresses from your visitors and build an in-house mailing list:
Offer a free report on a crucial topic
Free newsletter subscription
Articles reprint (offered via E-mail only, mind you)
Catalogue subscription
Offer a vital fact sheet about an aspect of your business or industry
Leave your URL Link Page
Guest Book
Classified ads page

As soon as you receive their E-mail address send them a "Thank You" message and short sales pitch about your products and services with links to your site either manually or via autoresponder. (See the end of article for information about autoresponders.) You can now send updates to the visitors of your site telling them about new services or products you might have. If they have subscribed to your newsletter, you have the opportunity to expose them to additional products and services as well as offering beneficial information to the theme of your newsletter.
An autoresponder is very handy for initial messages. You can design your message to reflect your sales pitch and invite your visitors to return to your site. I always include instructions how to be removed from your list if they chose not to receive further information from you.
Always use your messages to your advantage
As with your web site, you want to tell your potential customers what you want them to do and offer a way for them to do it. If you want them to request additional information-provide the means for them to request it. If you want them to purchase a product or service, provide the link, order form, or phone numbers to call.
Set up a schedule for follow-ups and automate as much as possible. I have drafted various follow-up messages and saved them in my "Drafts" folder. I have my newsletter welcome letter on an autoresponder. Periodically, though, I will get a subscription in my E-mail that wasnt sent to my subscription address and have to manually send my welcome letter. I go to my draft folder and copy and paste the message into an E-mail message to the subscriber and dont have to worry about where I have filed it in my word processing program or retype it every time.
Follow-up is a very important part of marketing your products or services, and has been one of my biggest downfalls. But I have found a solution to this. When I receive a message that needs to be responded to at a certain time, I immediately draft the message and save it in my draft folder and schedule a date for it to be sent. On that date all I have to do is go to my draft folder and send it.
I can also set up groups of E-mail addresses in my address book. This will allow me to categorize various groups of E-mail addresses. When I was sending my newsletter manually, I could submit the E-mail addresses of new subscribers to my Newsletter group and send the message to everyone at once. I would send it to myself in the "To" section and to the group in the "BCC" section. This way the E-mail addresses of the other subscribers did not show up on all of the newsletters exposing all E-mail addresses and were hidden.
Whether you send out a regular newsletter or periodic information to your visitors, be sure your messages are clear and concise and provide informative information and not just a sales pitch.
Never give up
Marketing online requires continuous effort. Running an offline business takes 3-5 years to become established. Operating a business online is no different. Granted there are a lot of people claiming to be making millions on the net, but the majority of it is hype. It takes effort to build a stable relationship with your customers. The Internet provides a means to provide a service or sell products to the World, but it doesnt happen overnight. Just as in offline marketing you have to get your products and services in front of people. Keep striving and you will reach your goals.
