Sam, My Border Collies Internet Marketing Advice! No: 15

Sam (thats my 12 year old Border Collie) and I were walking again through the Bush (Australian countryside). Sam as usual was ranging out from me checking for the Eucalyptus trees that needed his marketing skills.

When we reached our usual rock beside the fallen log, Sam said, "Did I ever tell you whats happened to Wally the Wombat?"

No Sam, I havent even seen Wally for ages. Hes not a very sociable type and when I do see him, he always seems to be grumpy.

"Oh, he wasnt always like that. Its just that hes been done for Spamming in everyone elses territory. Let me fill you in on what happened to him, then youll realise why hes so disgruntled.

As you know Gordon, Wally the Wombat has always been a fairly pushy sort of a bloke. He was never interested in others and would only do what he thought would be to his benefit.

Actually he was doing fairly well when he first started marketing but he was always skiting about the fact that there was a mug born every day and hed caught most of them.

Then things started to go bad for him and his business started to slip in proportion to the mugs that he caught, waking up and dropping him like a hot coal. That was when things started to get really bad for him.

Instead of waking up to himself and changing his attitude towards those hed suckered into his business and looking after those that were left, he decided that these mugs were expendable and all that he needed to do was to look further afield for a few more mugs.

That was a shame really as Wally had real marketing skills and he could have helped thousands to become profitable on the net if only hed had the right attitude.

As Wally had already burnt his bridges with so many in his area and got quite a reputation for dudding people he thought it was just fine to increase the number of areas in which to promote his rather dubious wares.

So Wally the Wombat bought one of these you beaut e-mail address extractors and started sending out his spiel to thousands and thousands of people on a daily basis. This worked for him for a while, so he thought hed once more gotten on top of the mugs.

Then he started to get an ever-increasing amount of returned mail. This didnt worry him in the least. All he did was delete it and keep right on going with his promotions. It wasnt long before his ISP got in contact with him and threatened to close down his account for spamming. Even with this warning, Wally still didnt learn his lesson.

The old Wally just thought to himself, I know a way around these mugs, so he sweet-talked his ISP into giving him a second chance. From then on he was very careful to delete a returned mail address from bulk e-mailer. This he thought would keep these mugs at bay and he continued on his merry way, spamming to his hearts content.

He hadnt taken into consideration that his ISP was an old chap that had cut his eyeteeth at marketing and knew all the dubious practices that pervade the net.

This old chap decided to take a special interest in Wally and monitored all the e-mails that Wally was sending. He even checked with a few of his ISP mates and found out that Wally was doing the same thing through them and they too had warned him on more than one occasion.

That was when old Wally came a gutser. He woke up one morning and found that all his accounts had been closed. All his you-beaut equipment was useless without access to the Internet and as hed been banned permanently by all the ISP outlets in his area his business activities on the Internet were over.

All old Wally can get now, is a bit of desk-top publishing and he doesnt get too much of that because people know all about his previous dubious activities. I guess its little wonder old Wally the Wombat seems always to be rather disgruntled"

I think that should be a warning to all of us Sam, lets go and get a bit of lunch.

"Now you know what a proper wally Wally really is." Said Sam. Sam always has to have the last word
