You Need Effective eMail Marketing

Category: E-mail Marketing Date: 2002-06-17
One of the most successful tools to create sales on your website is email. Are you effectively using email to get visitors to your site?

Most people do not correctly utilize this online tool to bring new people to their websites. Thats too bad, because if correctly set up it could double or triple your present rate of income. (Maybe even more!!)

The next hurdle is enticing site visitors to subscribe to your promotional email lists which will increase their exposure to your products and services.

Opt-In or Opt-Out?

Opt-Out

If you maintain an opt-out email list, people can be placed onto lists without asking for their approval, but their allowed to be removed upon request.

People on an opt-out list, may complain about receiving your messages. They will cry SPAM without even looking at who sent it and why.

This is dangerous for any online business, because if they contact your ISP you could find all your hard work gone in a flash.Usually its because they forgot they added their name to your list.Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE), called spam is a violation of the TOS for many Internet service providers.(TOS = terms of service)

Be sure you understand the policies of your ISP,because sending spam email could result in the cancellation of your Internet service. You may even be criminally charged by the police and end up in a courtroom.Just dont send email to someone who hasnt requested it.

Opt-In

If you maintain an opt-In email list, specifically request to be added to your email list and because they have given their approval you can send them emails.and may also be removed upon request. With opt-in lists, they also have the option of removal at a later date, if they decide they do not want to recieve your information any longer.

There are several places you can set up your Opt-In list such as eGroups, Topica & Globeclubs, to just to mention a few. These sites offer a free message center, with the only drawback being their advertiser-supported.For this Free Service you will find a small signature or banner ad attached to every message sent.

If you dont like the idea of ads other than your own in your list messages, consider the free mailing list program Majordomo. Once your mailing list is up and running, you can place a list subscription form on your site to make it easy for people to add or remove themselves from your list.

Here is an example of a simple subscription form

Will you offer a Newsletter or ezine ?

Most Opt-In lists also offer their subscribers a newsletter. The first rule is to K.I.S.S. it. ( Keep it simple stupid)You can decide on a daily, weekly or monthly delivery format. Its your choice so do whats most comfortable for you.

The content of your newsletter is your next decision.Be as informative as you can, and be sure to mention new features of your site and special sales.

You could create a newsletter providing advice on how to make better use of the products and services you sell. Or maybe you like pets or music. The content is only restricted by your imagination. Create a list you will stay dedicated to.

Be sure you have plenty of links to your site and encourage or entice people to "Click Them"

Plain text or HTML?

One issue youll need to consider is if your going to send email messages using plain text or the HTML format There are pros and cons for each.

All email programs allow people to read plain text messages.People who use older email programs may not be able to view HTML messages. Lets face it, visually HTML far outclasses text only messages , but if the subscriber is using an old browser, they may only recieve a page full of marks and misplaced letters.

Plain text may look boring next to HTML, but the draw back here is HTML is larger & longer than plain text, so they consume far more bandwidth. This may not be suitable for some subscribers who pay for it.

I might also add that some people are wary about receiving HTML messages because they fear the message could be used to transmit a computer virus.

Its safer to send out plain text messages although some businesses with large databases offer both a plain text and HTML formats. If you can offer the option, your miles ahead.

Auto-Responders

An email auto-responder is a 24-hours-a-day monitor.A basic auto-responder is a simple-minded email robot - any message sent to the auto-responder address will be sent a standard response. Many email servers let you set up auto-responders at no extra cost.

Auto-responders let you set up a series of follow-up messages that go out at predetermined intervals, one per day or one per week after your initial automatic contact was recieved.

Get-Response is Free Autoresponder that has an affiliate program that can be quite useful. You can also Opt to pay for the premium service so the only ads on your emails are yours. http://www.getresponse.com/?15060

You might set up an auto-responder at Sendfree.com
http://www.sendfree.com/affref.php3?ref=8663

Sendfree has a 1 for 1 trade affiliate program.Basically, for every person who requests your autoresponder message, an ad of YOURS will be delivered elsewhere at no cost to you. You can have reports delivered (or not) with the information about who requested your email. There is also the option of "collecting" ad credits to be used when you want at a later date. ( This is good for ad tracking, but thats another topic). Take the time to set-up your newsletter correctly, itll be worth it in the long run. Remember that these lists take time to develop into full fledged money earning machines, so be patient and Opt for quality and reliability in your newsletter, You wont regret it!!
