Why E-Zine Advertising is Three Times Better Than Renting Opt-in E-mail Lists
Category: E-zines: Advertising | Date: 2003-06-05 |
There are several reasons that E-Zine advertising is better than renting "opt-in e-mail lists". Many people have unfortunately turned to e-mail lists to promote their products - bad decision. Theres a good chance you have, too. With a little time and research, many opt-in users could have saved thousands of dollars. Theres a good chance that they would have received more responses (and sales...) also. Lets take a look at WHY E-Zine Advertising is so much better than opt-in lists.
1. Costs.
Think about this. Usually to rent names on an opt-in e-mail list, it would cost a bare minimum$0.10 US cents for each name. For a user purchasing 20,000, that would cost $2,000. Thats a pretty heavy price, and most new business owners couldnt afford that. Take note that most opt-in lists usually cost $.15 to $.20 US cents per name. That would be $3,000-$4,000.
Now, I recently saw an E-zine with 20,000 members and advertising costs listed. Heres how they looked. For a classified ad, which goes at the very end of the e-zine, it would cost $30.00 US dollars. Of course, there are other advertising options, but thats a HUGE savings of over $1,950.00.
Take note, however, that the e-zine I looked at had lower prices than most other e-zines. A classified ad in an e-zine such as this one would probably normally cost $100.00...But thats still a huge savings over purchasing an opt-in list.
2. Targeting.
Ok, now I may be wrong, but I believe that at least 50% of the "opt-in" e-mail subscribers delete e-mails they receive from the "opt-in" company. Now, there is a very, very small response rate in opt-in e-mail marketing. Its somewhere around .3% to .5%. So, if you purchased an opt-in list of 20,000, and half of them deleted the e-mail, that would leave 10,000 people left. Out of those, if only .3% responded, that would be 30 responses. Is that worth a bare minimum $2,000? I think not. So, actually, you would be paying at least $66.00 US dollars per response.
On the other hand, e-zine advertising is very targeted. Since the person actually SUBSCRIBED to the newsletter, people wouldnt just throw it away. They would look at the content. Since it is proven that E-zine advertising has anywhere from a 0.8% to a 1.2% response rate, ill take the average of 1%. Suppose 1% responses to an ad you purchased in an e-zine of 20,000 subscribers. The result would be 200 responses. Now for around $100.00, thats a pretty good deal. You would only be paying $0.50 US cents per response. Thats saving over $65.50 from opt-in advertising.
3. Reputation.
I dont know about you, but I hate receiving opt-in e-mail. I dont care if its targeted or not. Half the time I didnt even opt-in to it (that would otherwise be known as SPAM...). If your product is being advertised through opt-in e-mail, then most people would never visit your site. Most people dont understand that they "opted-in" in the first place, and theres a good chance that youll receive some pretty nasty e-mails from people. Those people will tell other people, who will tell other people, etc. Information on the internet travels FAST. Your website could go from top-of-the-heap to dirt in a matter of hours.
Once again, if youre advertising in an e-zine, people view ads differently. As long as theres not a little box that says "SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!", people will think that your website is actually a resource to the e-zine and there is a greater chance they will click on it!
To Wrap it up...
E-Zine Advertising is great. Opt-in e-mail lists...are not. If you have had decent results with opt-in e-mail lists, great. If you havent, try out e-zine advertising. Heck, check advertising rates for this newsletter. Make sure you dont pay too much for your e-zine advertising though! Be sure to check how many subscribers there are to an e-mail list before you buy advertising space. If you have any questions, contact the webmaster!
