Ezine Countdown
Category: E-zines | Date: 2001-04-19 |
=> DAY 1. Why you should publish an ezine.
If you own a website:
INCREASE YOUR TRAFFIC. Publishing an ezine will allow you to keep in touch with your visitors. Keep them updated on changes and new features. This will encourage repeat visits to your website and a steady stream of traffic.
EXPLODE YOUR SALES. If you own a commercial website, you can offer previous (and potential) customers special discounts if they buy within a fixed deadline. Your ezine also allows you to show competence in your field on a regular basis. Your subscribers will learn to view you with trust and respect, eventually resulting in more sales.
Otherwise:
CYBER-FRIENDS. Get in touch with people who have similar interests. Share ideas and make new friends.
E(asy)-MONEY. Sell ad space or use affiliate programs to earn a little cash. Once you have roughly 1000 subscribers, you can charge between $25 - $35 per ad. If you run ten ads, you could be earning $250 + per issue!
=> DAY 2. Planning makes perfect sense.
In order for your ezine to be a success, you'll need to do a little planning. This will save you a lot of time and unnecessary grief in the long run.
Get some ideas just by studying ezines written by your immediate competitors. This will allow you to get a feel for any techniques, styles and content that you could use. Question what elements you like and dislike and, more importantly, what can you offer that they don't?
=> DAY 3. What you can put in your ezine.
1) TIPS. Short tips make easy writing. They can be presented as a bulleted list in every issue or dotted here and there between lengthy sections to vary the pace and give your readers a breather. Many of your subscribers will be happy to send in their own tips in return for a little exposure.
2) ASK THE EXPERT. This type of feature normally attracts a lot of interest and is an easy way to build up your content in a fresh, original manner. You'll be doing your members a favour *and* showing off your knowledge.
3) INTERVIEWS. Interviews make pretty easy work. Just write a list of questions that you'd like to ask - and that your subscribers would like to read about. Send this by email to well-respected online authorities who work in your field. You'll get a good response so long as you're polite, professional, and generous.
4) ARTICLES. You should attempt to write your own articles but you can publish other people's. Article Announce will send you articles on a range of subjects (especially Internet Marketing) all formatted and ready to use. Subscribe here: article_announce-subscribe@egroups.com
5) REVIEWS. Write up short reviews of products or services suited to your ezine. Give your honest opinion - always. Never lie to your valued members just to make a quick buck with an affiliate scheme. You'll lose credibility *and* subscribers.
=> DAY 4. Designing a standard layout.
It's far better to stick to a standard layout every time you publish your ezine. That way, your subscribers will become comfortable with the format and they will view you as a professional rather than an amateur publisher - very important if you are hoping to make any sales. Request my free ezine template by email - it gives you all the design tips you need:
template1@writead.com
=> DAY 5. Writing your ezine.
I use TextPad to write all my ezines because normal word processing software can cause formatting problems. TextPad is a great little piece of shareware. You can download it here: http://www.textpad.com/
You'll need to configure the word-wrap between 55-65 characters per line - this is because anything larger runs the risk of having lines wrapped in odd places, making your ezine a mess to read.
To configure the word-wrap: On the menu bar select "Configure" then "Preferences." A box will pop up on screen. Open "Document Classes" on the left side and highlight "Text." Finally, check "Word break at column number:" and input a number between 55 and 65. I use 55 with my ezines to ensure that everyone can read it perfectly.
=> DAY 6. Where your first subscribers come from.
1) Write to other ezine publishers and ask (politely) for an ad swap. Try to stick to ezines that focus on your target audience and your ads will get better results. Be willing to offer on a 1 for 3 basis (you'll have to publish their ad for three consecutive issues) and you'll generate more takers.
2) Create a captivating signature file. Many email programs will automatically attach this file to your outgoing messages. All you have to do is write one - I show you how in my article: ab-art3@writead.com
3) Write up three great descriptions of your ezine at 25 words, 50 words, and 100 words. Save these descriptions in a plain text editor (Notepad or TextPad - http://www.textpad.com/) - you'll need to use them time after time in your promotional efforts. Use them now to announce your new ezine at the following sites:
The New List http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/scout/new-list/
NewJour http://gort.ucsd.edu/newjour/subscribe.html
Promote! http://www.promotefree.com
WEB PROMOTE. If you own a website, ensure that you provide a link on every page where your visitors can subscribe. The most popular method is to use a small form - I have one top left on every page.
THE WRITE WAY. Write an article on your ezine's theme. Include a short resource box at the end with subscription details. Submit your neatly formatted article (in the body of an email) to ezine publishers in your field. Make sure you include a short and polite letter requesting that they consider your article for publication.
=> DAY 7. How and when to deliver your ezine.
When you're just starting out, it's best to publish on a monthly basis - at least until you get a feel of how often you could comfortably produce your ezine. After publishing a few issues you may decide that you'd like to publish more frequently. This is fine - as long as you remember to keep your subscribers informed as to what you're doing.
Select a listserver to host your list. Take your time to choose one that suits your needs. You need to find out, for example, how large each email can be (important for ezines), whether you can check stats, how large your list can be, what support you'll get if things go wrong, if you can send attachments, and whether advertisements will be inserted.
