Getting The Results You Deserve!

Category: Entrepreneurship Date: 2001-07-09
Did you ever work in McDonalds, Burger King or KFC when you were young? If you did chances are this was one of your earliest exposures to selling. The smiley face asking whether you would like any drinks or fries with your order was an introduction to selling (not to mention a classic markup & sell). However, as a 16 year old one has no real concept of how much one is worth and the tiny sum offered by the employer at this time was ample to put a huge smile on your face that would last long after the customer had walked out with his coke and fries.

After all, the goal at this age is simply to be employed. The fast food powerhouses are absolutely huge and testament to the thought that they dont need to share a great proportion of their consideration with those at the front line.

The same goes for sales assistants. Greeting, serving and pleasing the clients of the store presents itself as a wonderful stepping stone but the truth of the matter is if youre not earning a percentage of what youre turning over then you arent optimizing your resources and the challenge of the job may eventually pass as your remuneration will no longer be proportional to your selling skills.

Six years ago a friend of mine decided to put herself to the test. Looking at it now it was a test for her but ultimately, at the time it was more of a risk than a test. Sure this would be risky but it had lots of potential and also many pitfalls. She went into Real Estate. She did listen to too many people and didnt really trust herself enough at first but the figures added up and sat very convincingly before her eyes. She was psyched. Man! Why hadnt she done this earlier???

She learned that the top 5% were earning well over $120,000 per year. Hell", she thought "I can do that!". At 40% per sale she needed to sell X number of houses alone and Y number in conjunction with other agents and shed be well on the way!!!

The truth of the matter is that she never did make it to the top 5% in accordance with her initial plan. I doubt whether she made it into the top half even. She was truly deflated and confided in me with the message believing she had failed. Had she maintained this thought then she would have been right!!!

However, the figures were still the same; those who were succeeding were still succeeding. Those who werent, slowly disappeared, occasionally to re-surface but only occasionally. Many in such a situation would just go back to what they knew and stay there. "Once bitten. Twice shy." was an expression we had heard from many.

Its fairly safe to say no one succeeds overnight but the halo effect experienced by many of my former colleagues has been too much to bear the risk of going through it all over again.

True! Direct sales swallows people: sometimes whole; sometimes it chews them up a bit before swallowing. Then there are those who get fairly well chewed but dont fall in and manage to get spat back out again.

She felt like she had a second chance as, although bruised and injured, she really wanted to try again. The option of going back to "The Devil You Know" may be a secure option but the dissatisfaction and uneasiness will inevitably return as it is what sent her searching in the first place. Follow your heart and have the courage to be persistent. Its all very new and almost certain that youll not succeed immediately.

Her goal was to leave her 9 to 5 employment, slowly build her business up to $100,000/Year so she could attain the things that were ultimately important to her. It is because of this she had been spat back out. She wasnt finished.

Now, six years later she has a huge clientele basis, earns well over her initial goal. In fact she earns more than the principle of the agency and is achieving those things that are her real deep seeded goals. Her work is merely the avenue to realizing her dreams and desires.

Getting the results you deserve will almost always be the case. If you arent happy with your results then you have to change your approach. Your current situation isnt as it is now per chance. It is the result of many decisions you have made in your life up until now. Think each major decision through carefully and learn from every facet of your experience, and for heavens sake keep on experiencing...

Think Successfully.
