I Wish I Could Write!
Category: Entrepreneurship | Date: 2001-07-30 |
How many times have you heard people say that? Many people really believe that being able to write is an exotic skill reserved for those with a natural talent or special training.
Not so. Almost everyone can learn to write if they really wish to do so. Why? Simply put writing is a way of communicating in lieu of word of mouth. Everyone can talk and make themselves understood. At least most of the folks I know can. They have been doing it since childhood and most of them quite effectively.
Why can't they write? Because they believe they can't that is why. What I wish for you to understand right now is that there are as many ways to write about a subject, as there is to talk about it. If you can talk about something with other people and they understand what you are saying, you can also write about it.
Ancient folks wrote without the benefit of a formal written language or alphabet. We are blessed with both. They told their stories through use of pictures, pictographs and symbols. There was no such thing as grammar or punctuation or other rules to follow. Just ideas to express or instructions to pass on. People say "I can't spell", "I don't understand how to use punctuation", "my grammar is awful", and use this as reasons not to try to write anything. Guess what? Some of the most famous writers of the past had those same shortcomings but it did not stop them from writing some pretty wonderful stuff. They found people who did know how to do those things and used them to edit and correct their writing for public consumption.
Wonder of wonders, we now have word processing programs available on our computers to check both spelling and grammar. Anybody can use these programs and learn a lot while doing so. No, you do not have to be a great writer to effectively communicate your ideas.
All you must have is an idea and the drive to describe it. Think about how you would say it and then write it down exactly that way. Then sit back and read it and see if it makes sense to you. If you can do that you can write and be understood by the reader. Remember the important thing here is communicating ideas. It is not a test of your writing skills or mechanics.
There is a certain amount of license writers can take depending on the intent of the writer. If you are a student writing for grades then there are probably very strict rules you must follow in your writing or you will fail the exercise. That is totally different from writing in the real world. Out here you write to pass along information, sell an idea or obtain information from someone. You do not need to be a professional to do this.
What you must do is think your ideas through completely until you know exactly what you would like to say. Once you do this you can talk yourself through a writing session. You can learn to make short outlines to build a logical progression for presentation of your topic. If you are a good typist you can talk yourself through your writing as you go. Otherwise learn to write your stuff in pencil (easily corrected) before using a typewriter or word processor.
If you are expressing an idea you must establish why the reader would or should be interested. In other words why should they take the time to read and understand what you are trying to say? Always establish a need. If there are advantages to your idea always stress these next in your discussion. Then cover what disadvantages you can think of. This is being honest. If the disadvantages outweigh the advantages you better find another idea. Always include sufficient details in your discussion to make sure the reader can see what it is you are talking about. Always be direct and to the point. The reader does not care how clever you are with words; they want to know what you are talking about and how it can benefit them. There is your main thrust and don't ever forget it.
Don't ramble or wander off in other directions. Stick to the point. Be brief and accurate in what you say. Never make a claim you cannot substantiate. This is true for both private and commercial writing. Always be honest and above board. People recognize hype and misleading material very quickly. Don't try to use language or words you do not understand. Stick with the language and words you use every day. Not doing so will make your writing formal and stiff and not effective at all.
Say you have your own business and need to prepare effective ad copy or write articles for promotional and advertising purposes. Right at this time you do not have the confidence to do this yourself. Well, there are a couple of things you can do. Find someone in your family or a friend to do it for you. Read all the stuff available on the Internet and copy it (not a good idea for several reasons). Sign up for some of the ad copy and promotional training courses available on the web. Which one? Who knows the answer to that one? Not me. Or you can find a service on the Internet willing and able to help you learn how to write. Not only that but find a service that will ghost write for you until you can handle the job yourself. This way your message is getting out and you are learning at the same time.
The ideal service available for this kind of work is the Internet Musketeers Incorporated Online Business Center or IMIOBC. They can do this for you and at very reasonable costs.
