Successful People Make More Mistakes
Category: Entrepreneurship | Date: 2002-04-30 |
Successful people make more mistakes, but they are successful because they try more things. Sooner or later they get something right. They dont win every time, but they end up winners simply because they dont give up.
Success is partly a mind-set; the person who cant be worn down by failures cant be brought down by any other cause. Almost every successful person became successful because they kept trying.
No one ever achieved success by quitting. My father used to listen to my ranting excuses about why I said I couldnt do this or that. He would ask me, "What did I cant ever do?"
I dont know if I would qualify as being successful. I guess it would depend on the yardstick used to measure success. If I used income to measure it, I might not qualify. However, every day I see people using my advice to make more money than I do, and it makes me feel successful.
I have had my share of business failures. For instance, I spent hundreds of hours building a automated follow-up tool which I really believe is the most powerful on the internet. It is capable of managing an unlimited number of products using any number of follow-up messages. There is nothing else out there that does that. Yet after several months I have only a handful of customers, (all satisfied) - but not enough to justify the time I spent in development.
Want another example?
I joined a MLM that offers a high-end computer for $179. All I had to do to earn it was to sponsor three people, then help those three people do the same. That is a total down-line of 12 people. Sounds easy doesnt it? Last year I had joined a similar computer MLM program. It required a similar investment, and building a down-line of 30 people. I earned the computer with the first program. while I have not even had one request for information about the later biz-opp.
Sometimes there is no clear reason why something fails while something else goes gang-busters .Anyone can tell you about their successes, but you would not be getting the full picture, because for every successful accomplishment there might be several failures you dont hear about.
I am guilty of this myself. After all, who wants to hear about anyones failures? The point to this tip is that you may not be successful the first time out. Perhaps you will fail several times. You might spend too much money to earn too little, but if you give up because you dont achieve instant success you fail in the long run because you take yourself out of the game altogether.
Success with Internet based marketing is difficult. Most people dont earn a lot of money in the first year or two. More importantly, most entrepreneurs fail several times before they become successful.
They become professional first, and then they dont give up. My personal belief is that its much easier to market several related products instead of one single product. The advantage is you spread out the risk and diversify your business. Naturally you would put more efforts into into your hottest products.
Once you have enjoyed even limited success, that success shows you what to do next to build up a larger income stream.
Last week, I visited a friend who had lost her job of 15 years. She was very upset because it was her only source of income. She is 56 years old, and no other employer would hire her.
She spent weeks knocking on doors. Im sure that employers gave her different reasons, but she knew it had to do with her age - which she couldnt change.
I asked her to look at her assets and take an inventory of what she and her husband enjoyed doing. She had an un-developed beadwork business that she worked in her limited spare time.
Her husband was one of the best artists I have ever seen. He was always doing posters and projects for others, and never felt completely comfortable charging for his excellent work. They both had several talents, but they were giving the products of their talents away.
They placed little value on their talents or the time they had invested to develop them.
The solution was simple. Rather than looking on the outside for someone to sell their time to, they could develop several small streams of income by charging for things they had been giving away.
We can all learn to develop small streams of extra income gradually that will replace the need to sell our time to others.
The loss of a job of 15 years was really an opportunity of a lifetime. It created a vacuum. Nature abhors a vacuum and will fill it as quickly as possible. I would never have learned Internet marketing if I hadnt lost my trade. It forced me to take a second look at what I wanted in life.
Success comes to those who dont give up, but everyone experiences failure. Successful people know the difference.Working from home is not easy, but everyone can do it successfully. It requires time on the learning curve, and effort to over-come the setbacks.
It requires a positive mental attitude managing your skills and assets. Just follow the natural laws.
