The Get Rich Click Phenomenon
Category: Entrepreneurship | Date: 2001-06-27 |
Three years ago, I can remember selling a web site to a man who patented this thing that hooked to your sunglasses to prevent sun cancer on your ears and another man who made beach cabanas out of things lying around his house. Today, they have something in common, they no longer exist. No, it wasn't because they had silly ideas, (we all remember how well the pet rock did) it was due to little or no marketing plans. They believed the biggest misconception about going online. "I put up web site, I get rich, I collect money".
It doesn't matter if you have found the absolute cure for hiccups, if you can't market your site and harness the power of the Internet, you might as well go try and sell a comb to a bald man.
So how do you market a new web site?
· Guerilla Marketing
This is one of my favorite tactics. Heck, I'd dress like a giant fish for Frank's Fish House and dance in traffic if I thought it would work. Sometimes thinking outside of the box (or fish tank) will be what separates you from the rest.
· Start local.
I live in South Florida and every winter, our roads get congested with what we call "snow birds". I one day thought "If only I could create that much traffic to my web site". Then it hit me. I will send a subliminal brainwashing to these people and make them take it home with them. That being said, I made my entire family wear matching bright yellow T-shirts with our URL on it to local festivals and events. (Honey, I am sorry I made you all look like dorks).
· Link Swapping
This seems like a no-brainer, but it's not. I don't suggest pasting ads all over your web site, just to be linked on someone else's. Find one or two GOOD mates, and your efforts will not only be easier to manage, your site won't look like a NASCAR Event.
· Newsletter link ad swapping
Does your web site offer a newsletter subscription? Consider signing up for newsletters complimentary to what you do. If you sell cookware, look for recipe newsletters and offer to swap a small advertisement or article. I promise you, if you find the right one, your traffic will skyrocket the day that newsletter goes out.
· Award sites
Submit your site to win awards like "Cool Site of the Day" or one of the top 10 sites on the net. Your site will be judged and may win one of these coveted awards and be recommended on their site and possibly included in their newsletters.
· Search Engines
There is a never-ending battle to be ranked at the top, so some search engines like the "Go to Network" are starting to offer keyword bidding. Don't automatically assume that you won't be able to afford this. Look at misspelled keywords too, if you sell products for entrepreneurs, try bidding on "entreprenuers". (Hey, not everyone is as bright as you are).
Please, believe in what you do and don't give up after 30 days and cancel your web site.Like any other business venture this is an investment. Starting a business requires sacrifices, planning and thinking.
Lastly, remember, you don't have to be the first web site with your idea, just better!
