Giving Away the Extras for

One thing that can set you apart from the competition is giving away something extra for no additional cost. Actually, in most cases the person will actually even pay for it, but it will be included in the price of whatever it is they are buying in the first place. Amazingly, the customer will applaud you.

Let me give you a few examples. Now, I know that these are things that I am really paying for but they seem free and that is good enough for me!

One example is the free breakfast I get when I stay at certain hotels on trips. When I take my wife and kids, we’re talking about 6 free meals. Well, there is no way they are giving those away for free. I paid for them in the room bill. But it sure feels good to think I’m getting something for nothin’.

Like going to the dentist? My kids do, because they get all sorts of ‘free goodies when they leave.

Some airlines give away free newspapers when you board. Some hotels do this too. Now if the airlines would only give away the headsets for free as well.

You see, it is really all about convenience and perception. They make it convenient for me to get something extra that I might normally get anyway, and the perception, at least at first glance, is that I got it for free.

So, how does that make me feel? Great. And all things considered, I am going to go with the hotel chain that gives me a free breakfast the next morning rather than the one where I have to pay. In fact, I may even pay more for the room at the place where I get the free breakfast!

So, have you thought about what you could give away for free? Perhaps it is a small service that would go well with a product you sell.

Perhaps it is another add-on product that would supplement the product they purchased.

Perhaps it is a coupon for something at another merchant who would love to tie into your business.

Give it a try. People love to get the extras for free!
