Decalogue of a Beginner in International Business
Category: Home Based Business - Getting Started | Date: 2003-06-22 |
The Internet, E-Commerce, International Marketing, Globalization, Import/Export... Seems to be the buzz words in business circles.
As more and more people desire to open their own businesses and become their own bosses, International commerce is becoming increasingly popular as an option for many devoted entrepreneurs. It looks so easy: you just need a computer , a connection to the World Wide Web and a fax machine to build a business.
Here we have the first mistake in reasoning. You can build an office, you can register a company, you can acquire contacts with people from all over the World. It still does not mean that you have built a BUSINESS. The illusion comes from the most powerful communication technology ever developed: the Internet. Information flow starts to SUBSTITUTE many important elements of a properly structured business. This substitution is a misconception: you can have the perception that simple contacts with overseas associates will eliminate the necessity to organise your business in the "standard", or conventional way. In the light of easy access to information sources, many budding entrepreneurs forget the pertinent aspects of business.
The Internet WILL NOT replace "business logic".
1. Any Business is created to SELL.
Whatever your business line is, you must sell something. If you do not sell anything, you have no business. It can be a service or it can be a product - whatever it is, it must be saleable.
2. To start any business that sells, you must start to CHARGE.
The Internet has created the mirage that services are available for free and many newcomers are simply afraid to ask for a price for their job. If you cannot overcome this obstacle and cannot start to charge your customers, you will never start making money. It is quite logical, isn’t it?
3. You need your product or service to charge for.
To achieve 1 and 2 above, you need to have something to sell and to charge for. Choosing the best business line for yourself might be the most difficult task. If you have the right spirit and understand basic business function "to sell", you will quickly find what to charge for.
4. Business should be treated as an independent "person".
No, I have not misspelled anything above. Business should prosper, should have cash available, should not be in debt, should have any legal troubles. It is a mistake to think about your business as a solution to, let’s say, your financial problems and to measure business potential from the perspective of your needs. This is wrong reasoning. Business should be treated as your baby: it should be given the best care, should be cultivated, shaped to perfection so as to be the BEST. Only THEN will it reward you well. Business must get better than you in the initial stages of its existence: be better off financially and have more fame. Do not worry: you will be noticed, but your business must be noticed first. Treat your business as another "person" and never do to it what you would not dare to do to another human being.
5. Care for yourself and you will care for your business.
If you do not care for yourself, you will never care for anybody, especially for your business. People try to make big money to make themselves happier and forget that they should be happier first to make money easier. The more you can achieve in your private life, the more goals you can reach, the more satisfaction you can get from little accomplishments, the happier you are and your positive attitude will project itself on your business. It builds high self-esteem, believe in yourself, believe in what you sell. Before you make big money, prove to yourself and others that you can get over your habits, be healthier, fix little arguments and unpleasant matters etc. Business will never fix them but it will profit from your higher integrity.
6. Follow basic business rules.
Any business anywhere in the real World, or in the virtual world of the Internet, has the same rules to be obeyed. These rules are universal, expressed in almost mathematical formulae and are guaranteed to work. Terms like "Marketing", "Pricing Strategies", "Advertising", "Cash Flow", "Working Capital", "Creativeness", "Business Plan" and a few others mean nothing (or even sound discouraging) if you have nothing to sell. You will not believe the amazing transformation of reasoning that takes place, when you know what to sell! All the above terms fall immediately in place and you start craving for more knowledge - and you gain it with ease!
7. Treat the Internet as one of many communication and marketing tools.
Do not rely entirely on the Internet in your business line. Even Internet service providers do not do that. The Internet will help you to make your global presence, to increase sales, to increase cash flow. It will never replace business as such, and business must come first and only then the Internet can be used to enhance your business potential.
8. Use your skills, talents, education.
Exploring yourself is the beginning of success. Your weaknesses should be known to correct them, your strengths should be exploited - everything for the benefit of your business. Many beginners make the basic mistake by neglecting what they already know and what they are skilled at, ending up doing something they have little or no idea about. Anything can be for sale, so sell what you do best.
9. Do not look for "ready-to-use" solutions.
"Ready-to-use" business kits are created to be sold, not to make you wealthy. There is no such thing as "business in a can". Your frustration and failures can lead to desperation: you fall for tempting advertisements and unbelievable promises of making millions in a short time. You are HUNTED by others who are selling such "kits". You can choose: we teach how to change your attitude from being the HUNTED to being a HUNTER. We base our training on simplicity of reasoning and exploring your potential. We do not say WHAT you should do to make money but simply HOW you should make them. At the end of our teaching, you will never make a mistake when it comes to your business.
10. Think "market" and "customers".
Probably the most difficult aspect of business for many beginners. To sell, you need customers to buy your product. To find those customers you need to know where they are - they are in your market. You will not believe how much time you save thinking "market" and "customers".
