The Myth of the Ease of Working at Home
Category: Home Based Business - is it for YOU? | Date: 2003-06-24 |
Being a working parent is one of the hardest things to dealwith in a household. Theres so much that has to get done, children to take care of and your own errands of life torun, and all of this is worked around whatever work scheduleyou have.
I have the luxury, if I shall call it that, of working athome. I work my own hours, am my own boss, and I dont haveto adhere to someone elses ideas of what has to get done.Fine. Sounds wonderful and simple enough. Wrong.
The first thing I found out when I decided to take my writing to a full time freelance job is that the children are the boss. They say when you will get your work finished. They say when you will even sit down to work. They make moreof the rules than you. Its their schedule you work around, not your own. Even if you plan out a flawless schedule, one of them will inevitably have more sick days than that guywho used to call out of work all the time at the office. And, unlike the guy who called out from work, this small person will require you take care of them. Your work day is shot!
The adventure in all of this is that you will learn that all those times you longed to be at home all day, you really had no idea what you were thinking. Not only is your day evenmore hectic, but a lot of times, theres no paycheck at the end of the week! On top of the worries of meeting deadlines,I have the worries of getting all the laundry finished, feeding the pets, feeding the kids, and keeping the little rascals out of the big brothers room so he doesnt go ballistic when he returns from school. My eight-hour day is lways more like a fourteen-hour day, without any of the classic benefits.
But, Id be lying if I said I didnt enjoy what I do. I love being at home with my children, even if they cant quite comprehend the fact that I am working. Children dont know what work means, after all, or, at least, mine dont! Scott, being the budding writer that he is, tries to leave me alone when Im working, but even he cant resist the temptation to tap me on the shoulder with one of his endless questions. All in all, though, the pros to my being at home and working far
outweigh the cons of the job. And even though I cant call out sick, at least I can receive a snuggly hug at any time of the day!
