A Lesson From the Old West
Category: Marketing Strategy | Date: 2002-05-13 |
Before the days of the railroad and long haul trucks, ranch owners had to drive their livestock hundreds of miles in order to get them to market. To show their ownership they would brand each animal with their own "logo". That simple little symbol would say to others that this livestock belongs to that cowboy from Texas.
When a would be customer or the regular everyday web surfer hit the pages of your website, they should also know who owns this site and be able to easily recognize, or recall, it again in case your particular product or service is needed in the future. Branding your website will do that for you.
Branding, for a lot of Internet entrepreneurs, still conjures up images of the Old West instead of a great ingredient to our overall Internet Marketing success.
Think of it this way.
Your brother says he wants some Nike sneakers for Christmas and, for the sake of argument, the store you went to didnt have words to distinguish one sneaker from another. I bet you could still pick out the Nike from the assortment.
Nike has branded everything they ever touch with their "swoosh" symbol so that everyone in the world knows what it means. Even if you didnt know what you were looking for, if you saw the Nike symbol, youd recall what company it stands for and their reputation for outstanding products and buy them.
In contrast to that, our small web businesses can benefit from branding in the same ways as commerce giants like Nike does.
Keep this in mind. Branding is not a form of promoting. There is a distinct difference between the two. Branding is to be used as a tool to make your promoting more effective and longer lasting.
The number one result from any type of advertising campaign is to funnel as many visitors to your website that you can. The optimal result of branding is to take over once the visitor hits your website and keep them coming back.
Your websites logo is a form of branding and probably the most recognizable form. Using your logo on banners, stationary, business cards, promotional items such as pens, coffee mugs, hats, T-shirts, and such are all ways to keep your website in peoples minds long after they have seen your site.
Like the livestock owner from Texas, if someone was to see your logo somewhere on the Internet, they would know what website it belonged to and what type of product you sold or service you rendered.
Its been said that information is king, but in the world of the Internet Marketer, its traffic. When you can get a constant flow of traffic to your website, your brand will keep those people coming back when they need what you offer.
They will remember who you are and will easily recognize you when the time comes around.
Take a lesson from the cowboys of the Old West. Get that iron good and hot and stick your brand on your website.
