How To Take Control Of Your Prospects Brain
Category: Marketing Strategy | Date: 2001-11-07 |
One question we hear often is: How can I get my prospects' attention when there are so many other online businesses competing for their time and money?
The answer goes beyond obvious things like a fast-loading site, benefit-oriented sales copy, a strong unique selling proposition (USP), a great offer, and a smooth ordering process.
That's because today, there's a lot more competition online. No matter how good your site is, there's someone who has put even more time and money into their Internet business than you have. And in case you don't know it... they want your customers!
Actually, it's not that hard to stand out from the ocean of sites out there, especially if you are willing to use technology to give yourself a little edge. You simply need to "break the state" of your visitors with an attention-getting offer that's both timely and relevant. How can you accomplish this? Easy...
With pop-ups!
Pop-ups are those little windows that open when you visit certain web sites. They usually include a "call to action" and a response mechanism, like a link or opt-in form. The most important thing about pop-ups is they are hard to ignore!
They can dramatically increase your ability to capture opt-in names, make "second chance" sales presentations to visitors, and test headlines and hot buttons. The best thing is, they can be programmed to open a totally separate browser window, which allows you to display any page or offer you want, including an:
1) Opt-in form
2) Alternative site
3) Affiliate page
4) Product page
5) Order form
6) Survey page
If a prospect wants to do something else, they have to close your pop-up first. Because you make them take action, you have in essence "taken control of their brain" by making them view a specific page at the exact moment you want them to.
There are four main types of pop-ups, each with its own benefits and functions:
- Entrance Pop-Ups: Opens when someone arrives on your site. A great way to capture a prospects attention the minute they hit your page. Good for generating opt-in names, offering an e-book or report, or updating visitors on a new feature or product offering.
- Exit Pop-Ups: Opens when someone leaves your site. Excellent for capturing opt-in names or presenting "second chance" offers. You can program them to open only when someone doesn't order. Exit pop-ups are a good place for survey questions or headline tests (put several on a pop-up, and track which one gets clicked on the most).
- Load "Behind" Pop-Ups: Opens a second browser window under the main window. If you have two sites, you can make both open at the same time (even though the visitor only entered one URL). A good way to deliver both content and a sales message at the same time (see example at http://www.cyberwave.com/omt39.html).
- Cookie Pop-Ups: Opens a new browser only after a certain period of time has passed. If you have a content site that gets a lot of repeat traffic, use a cookie pop-up so you don't annoy surfers with the same pop-up again and again.
Pop-ups are the easiest way to interrupt the mental flow of someone who visits your site. They allow you to control what they see, and place them directly in front of your most responsive, relevant offers.
If you are trying to generate more leads, make more sales, or simply learn your target market's hot buttons, pop-ups are the simplest way to get started.
Good luck and happy marketing!
