Storming FFA Pages - The Intelligent Way

Category: Marketing Strategy Date: 2001-04-22
Although there have been a lot of arguments and doubts about the effectiveness of FFA pages, they are definitely worth a try. Even though it is hardly possible to create any noticeable traffic to your website with FFA, they can boost your URLs link popularity, which is increasingly important for search engine ranking.

At the very least, submitting to FFA pages is easy and free - so why not do it?

However, to make the most of FFA, as well as to avoid certain pitfalls that they are notorious for, you should do it the right way.

This is how I understand this "right way":

SET GOALS.

As with any promotion, the first thing we do is define goals. What do we want to achieve? What do we need to avoid?

By submitting to FFA, we want:

- To increase our link popularity
- To (hopefully) drive some traffic to our site
- To know exactly which of the FFA submitters really work (and use them for later promotions).

At the same time, we dont want to sink in the spam they will send back.

Now lets try to accomplish those goals.

CREATE A SCREAMING AD.

Although the chances of your ad being looked at are not very high (very low, actually), it is still worth thinking about a decent ad -- at least, a headline. Your headline should SCREAM!!! Yes, scream, because it will have to compete with a hundred of other screaming headlines. Try to create something catchy and unsual.

FIND FFA SUBMITTERS.

Tastes differ, but I still dont think youre attracted by the idea of submitting to 20.000+ pages manually. Its much easier to do it through a FFA submission script. There are a lot of free FFA submitters out there. Pick up 5 or 10 and test them.

CREATE DOORWAY PAGES.

This is to test the submitters. You dont want to loose time on those that dont work, right? So, pick the right ones by testing their performance, i.e. giving each submitter a unique link.

To do so, make a doorway page for each submitter youre going to test. Sounds too complicated? Its not! Open your Notepad and copy this code:

html
head
META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="0;URL=index.html"
/head
body/body
/html

Then save it as "page1.html", file type="All files". Make as many copies as you need, rename them (page2, 3...) and upload to your sites main directory. Thats it!

We could, of course, make it even easier by using links like http://yourdomain.com/index.html?promo1. But I have serious doubts about search engines ability to read URLs with a "?". So, I prefer to stay on the safe side.

(Dont you know this trick with a question mark? http://www.artofebiz.com/index.html?whatever1 and http://www.artofebiz.com/index.html?whatever2 will both bring you to my sites homepage (try it!), but in my logs they will show up as 2 separate entry pages. So if you give each ad a unique link (like http://yourdomain.com/index.html?ad1), you will know exactly how many people clicked on that ad. A nice and easy way to track ad performance!)

GET A FREE EMAIL ADDRESS

Most of the FFA pages exist with just one purpose: to give their owner a right to send back a promotional email. Like, you know: "Thanks for submitting to our FFA! By the way, weve got some great stuff blah-blah..."

So, if you submit to 20.000 pages, you can expect to receive 20.000 emails. Are you sure you want them in your poor little inbox?

Thats why you should obtain a free web-based email address - specifically for this purpose. Hotmail.com, netaddress.com and many others are always at your disposal.

READY? GO!

Looks like were ready. Now comes the easy part. Just copy, paste and submit, using a unique link for each of the submitters. And dont forget your new email address!

A couple of days later, open up your Special Junk Mailbox and hit two Magic Buttons. Yeah, right - "Select All" and "Delete".

Done! Now forget it for about a week...

...Welcome back. TIME TO TEST RESULTS!

First, look at your sites logs. Are there any hits on your doorway pages? Which page (i.e. which submitter) generated hits?

Now go to JimTools Link Popularity Checker (http://www.jimtools.com/link.html) or a similar service and check popularity of each of your doorway pages. Which page has the most (if any) links to it?

These procedures should give you a more or less clear picture about the real effectiveness of FFA pages and different FFA submitters. Just pick up the most successful one and submit to it, using your real domain name (http://yourdomain.com), once a week or so.

And, of course, dont forget to test new FFA submission services, new ads, and new headlines!

Because on the Internet, there are only two types of companies - those who test and those who lose money.
