The Truth about Testimonials
Category: Marketing Strategy | Date: 2001-08-20 |
Are your ads a little stale? Is your web site a little boring? Don't feel alone. From time to time we all run out of fresh marketing ideas, and it seems we're banging our heads against a wall trying to come up with that eye-catching graphic or that glib phrase that will make our sales skyrocket.
Maybe it's time to take a different approach. I've found that rather than trying for crazier and crazier marketing ploys, it pays to get back to the basics. Those "old-fashioned" methods of advertising we often overlook are quite often still the most effective. Among these tried and true approaches, the customer testimonial is one of the most successful. People are often skeptical about advertising claims, but they almost always believe another customer.
Testimonials work anywhere. You can post one at the top of your web page, and include a few more as side columns, or between paragraphs in your sales text. You can use a testimonial to make a sales letter more effective, either in the body of the letter or as a catchy opener. If you have an office, try putting a few nice customer comments up on your wall. People will definitely notice.
So how do you collect testimonials? It's actually quite easy. No need to wait for a letter. When a customer mentions that they have enjoyed your product or service, just ask them if you can use their comment. Since you've just made them happy, they will almost always say yes. Ask them to write it down, or write it down for them and ask them to sign it. Also, If your business is brand new, get testimonials from friends, experts, or anyone who will give you a "hey, this looks good to me" type of comment.
Ultimately, the use of testimonials will lend your business the essence of success. If people think that you've made someone else just like them happy, they'll be far more likely to use your product or service. So stop worrying about that next great marketing trend of 2001. Stick to the basics and watch your business boom.
