Dont Blindly Turn Customers Away

Category: Marketing Date: 2001-03-27
If we all had traditional store fronts as opposed to web sites, how many of us would stand someone outside the shop and instruct them to refuse entry to one in five potential customers?

None of us would do that, it would be plain stupidity if we did.

Yet the really crazy thing is that many web site owners are doing just that. What's worse is that I suspect most of them don't even realize it. Allow me to explain.

I've just been looking at the latest global statistics offered by www.thecounter.com. They show, out of all the visitors to all the sites on which their service is used, which screen resolution visitors were using, color depth, etc.

Take any one of these statistics. For example only 24% of web browsers were viewing at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, and yet it's frightening how many web sites out there are literally unusable in anything less than that.

I've seen many web sites that only work with Internet Explorer, while it's true that the global statistics show 75% usage of IE4 or IE5, that still leaves 25% of web users who are using another browser. If you're site only works with one browser type, you could be turning away one in four potential customers.

WebTV boasts hundreds of thousands of users. Sure they may be a minority, but they are all still potential customers.

One useful site that will test your site and provide many useful tips to aid you in getting the best overall compatibility, is http://www.anybrowser.com/, it even shows you exactly what your site looks like in a number of browsers including Web TV.

It all comes down to this: If you are like me, you are online to reach as many potential customers as you can. If you work hard at your web promotion then doesn't it seem silly that you could be turning away 25% of all the visitors you worked so hard to get?
