The Tale of The Disenchanted Internet Marketer
Category: Marketing | Date: 2001-11-22 |
It was a super buy, a steal of a deal. Plus, an opportunity to use viral marketing to my advantage. Having been doing business on the internet for the past 3 years, I pride myself as being as Savvy as the best.
You know how it is, there is an ever flowing river of ebooks and "how to's" with at least a dozen new ones being cooked up every day. Shoot, there are more ways to make money on the net than there are cases of Coke in the U.S.
Yet, we all know, that there are only a limited few that match our own situations, criteria, or needs, when it comes to making money with the product or service. These particular products or services are met with the utmost scrutiny.
Because most are a re-write or re-make, I rarely buy into any of the latest ebooks, services, or methods that are "guaranteed" sales boosters or money makers of any kind.
But, this was different. It was sound information, fresh, legitimate, and above all else, extremely credible. I bought it !
Taking the time to learn all that could be found about the person behind the product, considering the price, the usefulness to all marketers and the viral benefits to myself, I was convinced this was a "top seller"
All indications pointed the way to hundreds of sales in the next 2 or 3 months. This information was a "self seller", a real gold mine. Every marketer in their right mind would have to have this. Anyone could see this was the answer to mucho sales! I bought it !
As a marketer, you know what comes next, Preparations. Ads built upon exacting words, sales letters to the same degree. The Website was built to stringent specs. The order taking process was put into place in such a way that customers could make an order as easy as falling off a log.
Last, but certainly not least, a delivery process was implemented to deliver the newly purchased goods instantly, no waiting. Ah, now I was ready to broadcast this brand new, innovation to the entire world.
So starts the Promotion. I ran the entire gamut, free classifieds, solo ads, top sponsor ads, classified sites, search engine sub-missions, resource boxes tagged to articles and probably a few more methods that my brain refuses to remember at the present.
Day 1 after the advertising barrage began, I rushed to open my inbox and count the first days orders. Not a single order! Oh well, everyone says these things take time, repetition you know.
Day 2 of advertising, I'm fully prepared with a brand new wheel barrow, to began the arduous task of hauling all that money to the bank. Checking the inbox reveals a disappointing revelation. Not even one sale !
Day 3 of advertising, this is the magical number, right. Hurriedly opening my email, thinking that the new wheelbarrow may not be large enough for the job at hand. Surprise ! 1 sale, one measly little sale. At least there's one genius out there that knows real "value" when they see it.
Month 3 of advertising, I have now made just enough sales to cover my initial investment on this "sure fire" product. And, once again, I am convinced that I must be the only Gullible Gilligan on the entire internet.
What happened ? Who knows, Gilligans don't have much to think with in the beginning . Am I alone on "The Planet of The Guru's" ?
Wishing You Success,
