Find A Need & Fill It

I remember when Ted Williams broke the world record in the pole vault in the sixties. They put his picture on the Wheaties box. It had been a number of years since the world record had been broken, and he broke it by several inches. A reporter asked how he was able to jump so high. "I just throw my heart over the bar and my body had to follow"

After 4 years of working for myself full time, I am still astounded by the lack of understanding about how the internet actually works.

People dont subscribe to newspapers and magazines to read the ads, right? People subscribe for the content - the information. The Internet takes it one step further. You have to actively seek out the information you want on-line.

Corporations want the Internet to become more like conventional broadcast mediums by offering "channels" of information which are related to your interests, Most of us cant afford the costs involved in that kind of upscale marketing.

Effective marketing is simple. "Just find a need and fill it." Selling on-line is actually easier than selling off-line because you have an almost infinite and growing customer base.

So how do I offer valuable content that people want on-line and how does that translate into dollars youre asking? Look to your own desires and abilities for the answers.

What would you do with your time if you didnt have to work? It doesnt matter if your interest is cars, dancing, mountain climbing, motorcycles, tattoos, government, pets, sports, or wildlife. It just doesnt matter. You are going to excel within your area of interest and expertise. Its about your desires and intentions.

Successful Internet marketing is all about networking. Its about building natural relationships in common areas of interest and sharing and exchanging your knowledge with others.

Its understandable how we could miss the point. We are used to marketing that is pushed in our faces, such as that in Radio, TV, magazines, and Newspapers. Ill call this PUSH marketing. Push marketing is a numbers game. If you have money, you can buy enough time or space from a provider. Your job as a marketer is to find the biggest bang for the buck. You seek out vendors to provide you the numbers you are looking for in order to earn a profit.

A small, home-based business doesnt do as well using this type of marketing. Unless you have a lot of money already, you cant win. Large corporations use the economics of scale giving them a huge advantage, right? Not so.

You can do something they cant, You can attract customers using valuable free information in your unique areas of interest and expertise. You can provide a solution to a problem or help others cultivate their interest. Not only does it work like magic, it makes you feel good in the process. The most successful on-line businesses are about 90% information and 10% selling within a very narrow niche.

Rather than working towards a goal when you are following the path of your desire, you can actually get lost in the process. The process becomes the goal.

If this is true, why do people send millions of spam emails while at the same time trying to hide their true identity? You dont need to reach a million people. In fact, you can do much better reaching a few highly interested people within your niche who are looking for your expertise already.

Would you rather play benchwarmer in the big leagues or coach a minor league team? Rather than accept a .01% response, why not work towards significant market share within your niche or special interest?

Marketing by attraction is what we have been talking about. Its so easy. Do what you love and the money will follow. Your desire will create a vacuum that only you can fill when you are sharing what you love. You cant lose unless you quit, and you wont quit if you are doing what you love.
