New Years Resolution:
Category: Net Business Start ups | Date: 2003-06-25 |
You indulge in a luxurious stretch as you slowly awaken, refreshed, to a new day.
You plan to have a leisurely breakfast, then spend a few hours working online ... take a break to greet the children coming home after school ... and then work a few more hours - or maybe not, depending on how you feel. Maybe youll spend time out in the garden, or relax with a book instead. Its such a beautiful day - you might as well enjoy it!
No doubt every aspiring online entrepreneur dreams of the day when he or she can quit their day job and work from home. I mean, come on - EVERYONEs heard of how much money there is to be made on the Internet; so why not just quit your job and go for it?
Making money on the Internet is not nearly as easy as it may sound. And becoming self-employed, while it has its advantages, also has its definite disadvantages as well.
Examples?
Self-employed people never know how much theyre going to make each month. This is especially true of doing business online; the Internet can change so rapidly that your online income can vary significantly from month to month.
Self-employed people may have a tough time getting loans - banks are nervous about your variable income and whether or not youll be able to pay back the loan.
Self-employed people have to look after providing their own healthcare benefits.
Newly self-employed people may actually find that they miss the office! No joke; some people find that they miss the interaction with coworkers. Others may find that they need or like the structure of the office - it may be difficult to motivate themselves when theyre working at home, alone with their computer all day long.
Im not trying to dissuade you from pursuing a dream of working from home; far from it! Instead, to help you reach your goal of quitting your job, consider the following:
RESOLVE TO START OR GROW YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS.
*Dont* make it your New Years Resolution to quit your job this year. Instead, focus on starting or growing your online business. Work hard at it and, in time, quitting will naturally become your reward.
SET REALISTIC AND MEASURABLE GOALS.
Motivate yourself to work towards specific goals. They dont necessarily have to be monetary goals. Some examples of goals you can set are:
Learn HTML well enough to create your own personal web page in 4 weeks.
Research products, services, affiliate programs, and so on for the next two months. By the end of this time period, your goal is to have decided what the focus of your business will be.
If you already have an online business, your goal can be to poll your visitors about what they like or dislike about your site. You can then group their responses and come up with specific actions you can take to improve your site.
And, of course, you can set monetary goals such as: make your first sale in the next month, or increase your online income by $500 next month.
Strive to meet your goals and track your progress. Your goals are not set in stone; if you find youve underestimated or overestimated something, then revise your next goal to be more realistic. Keep your goals challenging but achievable.
RESOLVE NOT TO LET THE LITTLE THINGS GET YOU DOWN.
Starting a new business is always tough, especially in the beginning. Realize that everyone has ups and downs, and that it takes time before you start bringing in income (or increase your income). Dont let it get you down! Resolve to learn from your mistakes and work through the hard times. Be persistent!
Prove to yourself that you can generate a good income over the Internet, and for a prolonged period of time. Hard work, determination, and a willingness to learn will get you there ... and one day in the near future youll be able to utter those sweet words, I QUIT!.
