THE NEWBIE BEWARE
Category: Net Business Start ups | Date: 2001-04-12 |
Have you ever had a quiet moment, where all the noise of the day freezes in motion, and wondered to yourself, "isnt there more to life than this?". If you have, then you are not alone and this article is for you.
Hello. Allow me to be the first to introduce myself as "The Newbie". I am a 25 year old career person, currently working as a Dental Hygienist in a very small town. Two years ago, upon graduating with my bachelors degree, I just knew I was on the right track. I was planning my wedding, getting moved into my "dream house", and had just found a great job working for a wonderful person. At age 23, I was living my dream, or what I perceived to be my dream.
Not long after starting up my promising career, I began to feel isolated from the world. All there was to my life was work and home. Becoming increasingly depressed about my life, I often wondered if this was it. Was my dream life suddenly becoming my prison? My answer was sadly, "yes". And so, being of competent mind and spirit, I set out on a journey to explore the many options open to me. Being a Dental Hygienist, I had right away doomed myself into a lifetime career of answering to someone else. And why not? My parents, as well as their parents had done the same thing, so why was this not good enough for me? My answers kept coming back to one core GOAL- I wanted to answer to no one but ME!
This is a chronicle to not only help the "newbies" of the internet, but also to encourage anyone with even an inkling of hope of being their own boss. Being independently wealthy is not where most of us began in life, and therefore, we have to MAKE our own opportunities. But, where to begin? Well, it began for me sitting in front of the television.
Upon clicking onto one of those "paid advertisements" we see on Saturday morning, I was instantly awestruck. The well-dressed man was sitting in front of the ocean and palm trees describing how he had come to be worth well over half a million dollars in just under five years! I immediately picked up the phone and ordered the course. Even though you may be right now calling me a sucker, I have no doubt that many people have made a lot of money utilizing this course. However, after two solid weeks of earnest reading and studying, I was very knowledgeable about real estate, but not enough to actually go out and pursue it. That would have put me in the hole
several thousands of dollars, of which I had none.
--TOTAL LOST WAGES: $200.00 (not to mention two weeks of my life)
Down but not out, I continued my search for the ultimate money-making opportunity. Once again, perched in front of the television, I stumbled upon another course. This one utilizing futures stocks and options. I truly believed that this would really be the way to go if given the right amount of useful information. But once again, I found myself a week later, clueless and facing an investment of $2000.00 just to begin!
---TOTAL LOST WAGES: $75.00(and another week or two of my life)
After all of this and nothing to show for it, I had somehow ended up on some mailing list. So this time, instead of being sucked into television sales, I bought into mailed advertisements. This one promising to make me rich quick on the stock market using options and hedging techniques . While half-heartedly leafing through the manual, I was struck by one thought - "why try to make money doing something you know nothing about?" And so began my whole-hearted search for a business that was perfectly suited to ME.
The internet is such a wonderful place to find yourself, your gifts and talents, but it can also be a very deceitful place. We have all read the disclaimers at the bottom of a private web page or ezine - no one knows whos telling the truth and who isnt. I recently read an article about the lack of truth on the web and I have to agree. The word FREE is posted on nearly every web site, but we all know that very few things in life are free. Most of them are only free IF you do something for them in return.
I have related this story to you because I have been there, where you are today. Constantly searching for that perfect business to live your dream of financial independence. Someone once told me that all it takes is a little common sense, but I have to disagree. After going through hundreds of dollars trying to "create" my independence, I know a lot more now and would never regret a penny of it because of what Ive learned along the way. But if I can help you to avoid similar mistakes, then I will have attained my goal.
Almost everyone on the internet today is out to reach one goal and one goal only: To Separate You From Your Money! Most of us know this, but people like myself, the "newbies", have had to loose money to grasp this idea. So, if you follow a few simple guidelines, Im sure you can avoid the pitfalls of the www and create your own destiny, rather than pay into someone elses.
Always first look deep inside yourself for your one core VALUE. I stated before that my core GOAL was to be my own boss. But my core VALUE is a little bit different. I also recently read an article that stated if your goals dont match up with your values, you will fail in all attempts. Therefore, my core VALUE is to help other people, and if I search for an opportunity to do just that, my GOAL will naturally follow and be realized.
Always go in with an open mind and open eyes!: dont expect to find that perfect opportunity staring you right in the face. Get rich quack schemes are posted all over the internet and most of them are made to sound easier than they actually are.
Always be suspicious of opportunities that will ONLY reveal their business AFTER you pay into them:
These schemes make newbies easy prey, and rightly so. Promisesof thousands of dollars a month sound so fantastic. Whats $30.00 if youre going to make $3000.00? The truth is, once they have your money, they have it. You have just bought into their dream, and yours is going to take a lot more effort to accomplish using their tactics.
Never be afraid to check into any of these businesses. If it doesnt save you time, it will save you money in the long run. If you are emailing a business to ask for more information, beware! Many of these companies utilize autobots. These are automated, pre-typed letters, and once you have given them your address, they are automatically sent to you to entice you into their business. Make sure you receive PERSONALIZED email responses. If you cant reach an actual person to answer your questions, or to direct you to one of their clients, I would hesitate to go any further.
Most opportunities involve marketing of one sort or another. If this is the case, be aware that marketing takes large amounts of time, if placing classified ads. Likewise, it can also take moderate amounts of money if you are advertising in ezines. There are many ezines, however, that offer free advertising some days of the week. If advertising this is the route you choose, be wise in your time and money investments, but most importantly, research the five Ws before placing any
ads!
1) Who is going to be interested in product (audience)
2) What is it that your audience wants
3) When is your audience going to be logging on and reading your advertisements
4) Where is your audience going to be logging on (ezines and search engine classifieds)
5) Why would your audience want to buy your product
And finally, if you cannot find a good, sound business opportunity to suit you, create your own!
Information is the one main product selling on the internet today. We are all from different backgrounds, ethnicitys and schools of thought. Creating your own information to promote is more difficult than it sounds, but with a little web-education and diligence, you can make a fortune utilizing information on your favorite hobby, sport or business.
Today, I have not yet even begun to scratch the surface of what the web can do for me, but with each day brings new opportunities. I have made it a goal each day to think up a new idea and to learn a little more about the internet as I quest for my "perfect business". I may not be a millionaire, but I am also not asking myself, "is this it"? Because, the answer is always emphatically, "NO"! This is only the beginning for all of us! Good
luck!
