Tips for Newbies (and everyone who still feels new on the Net)

Category: Net Business Start ups Date: 2001-09-06
A lot of newcomers to the Internet feel like they have just stepped off a plane into a new, strange country. Actually, the two experiences arent too far apart; after all, the Internet has its own strange places to explore, its own customs, and even its own language -- just like a foreign country. A form of "Culture Shock" is just bound to happen when you begin exploring the possibilities of the Internet.

As many experienced travellers will tell you, however, there are a few things you can do to reduce the confusion and frustration you experience when you encounter a new culture. Not surprisingly, a lot of these tips can be adapted to the cyber-world. Here are three of those tips you can use to reduce your stress as an "Internet Newbie":

1) Do your research: Just as you would read a lot of travel books about a foreign country you are visiting, you should read up on the Internet before you delve too deep into it. There are many good books for beginning users of the Internet, including several from the now-famous "{Blank} for Dummies" series. You can also find books on the Internet itself that are intended for beginners to the Internet or to e-commerce.

2) Be a good observer: Any successful traveller will tell you that the best way to adapt to a new place is to watch the natives -- "Do as the Romans do," so to speak. By watching and listening to people, you can get a good idea about what is acceptable and what isnt. Do the same with the Internet -- for instance, if you want to put up a web site, go look at others sites. This will give you a good idea of what is possible, what is effective, and what is frowned upon.

3) Find the right tools: Phrase and travel books, pocket translators, and maps are the required tools of the sophisticated foreign traveller. For the Internet traveller, there are even more tools that are available to you, and you should take full advantage of these. A good example would be tutorials that help you with the tasks of building an e-business. As you do your research on the Internet, keep your eyes open for these time-saving (and, in some cases, hair-saving) tools and services.

The Net can sometimes be a scary and confusing place, even if you have been using it for years. For the Net Newbie, these feelings can be especially powerful. However, with these techniques, you can minimize the time it takes to become familiar with the Internet and start your way to becoming a Net Veteran.
