Understanding Your Computer: Knowledge is POWER!

Category: Net Business Start ups Date: 2002-02-28
Are you a little confused? Trying to guess what this stuff means? You are not alone.

Megabytes (mb) Megahertz (mgH) RAM (memory) Space (hard drive).

It is very confusing. When I ask folks "how much memory do you have?" The most common answer is "I have a big hard drive". Or when I ask "what is the speed of your Puter?" I usually hear "I don't know". There is a terrible lack of knowing what all of this means. You really have to know these things if you want help. It's kind of like playing golf with a baseball bat.

Well, now you will understand. When you ask for help, you will know what the questions mean and where to find it.

Memory (RAM or Read Only Memory): This is what the Puter thinks with. It is also called Temporary Memory. You will find this information in Windows by clicking your "Start" button, "Settings", "Control Panel", "System". Here you will find the version of Windows you have, the manufacturer, type of processor and the amount of RAM. It would be like 64MB RAM, 128MB RAM and so on. This is listed in Megabytes which is confusing because the hard drive is usually listed in Megabytes (older hard drives) or Gigabytes.

RAM stores temporary data and when you shut down the Puter it empties itself. Nothing here is saved. When you open a new program the instructions and data change. When you do more than the Puter memory can handle, you get a message :Low on resources". To overcome this type of problem you can add more memory. Today 64MB is minimum and 128MB is recommended.

Megahertz (Clock Speed): This is how fast the Processor or brain of the Puter runs. You may have a Pentium 3-500mgH, Pentium 1-166mgH or Celeron-650mgH. This is usually located in your user manual and also may show when you first start your Puter. It should also be on a tag on the case.

Hard Drive (storage space): This is where permanent information is stored. Call it a giant file cabinet. When you save something it is copied from Memory (RAM) to your hard drive saving a permanent record of your information. The programs live here as well. To find out how much total space you have and how much is left, double click on "My Computer", click once on the "C" drive and (you will probably want a full window) on the left you will see "Capacity", "Used" and "Free". These will be listed as X.X GB (or example 4.3 GB).

Now when someone asks you what kind of Puter you have you can tell them "Celron 750" or "Pentium 166".

If they ask how much Memory (RAM) you have you can tell them "64 meg (megabytes), 128 meg or..."

They ask how big is your hard drive, you can tell them "20 gig (gigabytes) with 7 gig free".

If you own an Ebusiness, knowing your computer is critical to giving you all the power and control that is essential to making it a success! There's absolutely NO REASON to feel intimidated by your computer! Take the time to learn and understand it. If you don't, you'll feel like it is smarter than you, and that is just not true!

Happy Putering,
Mike Smith, esm
