Web Site Design: Just Do It
Category: Net Business Start ups | Date: 2001-06-28 |
There are lots of reasons not to start on your website, ezine, ebook or other internet related project. I've used many of them myself, and I've probably heard them all.
It's been done before - This is a classic excuse that I hear over and over (never used it myself). Someone has a great idea for a website or a product, but they don't ever get started, because they found a site which already does what they wanted to do. This is not a valid reason to delay getting started on your website or other internet project. You see, you will never created a totally unique thing - and once you do create it you can be sure that a thousand people will steal the concept (if not the actual work) for themselves! So don't let this stop you. Just do it.
It's never been done before - Another classic excuse which holds absolutely no merit. You are a unique individual with a viewpoint all your own. You have interesting ideas and experiences which other people would enjoy learning about. So regardless of whether or not it's been done before - just do it.
It's too hard - Okay, sometimes this is a good reason to rethink your project. Perhaps the scope is a little large. If this is really true (and it usually is not), then scale it down and, well, do it.
I don't have the time - Is this project important to you? If so, then spend a few minutes thinking over what you do during the day. Are you watching television for an hour or two every night? That's more than enough time to create a web site or work on an ezine. Just allocate one or two hours a day, every single day, and you will make astounding progress. Alternately, what I do is write at least one article every single day. By making a goal to do something every day, you guarantee that you will make steady progress.
I fail at everything I do so why get started - I understand. However, I would define not getting started as just another failure. You cannot win if you don't play the game. So get started and don't worry about failure. If you do fail, learn from the experience and try again.
There are a thousand other sites already doing exactly this - So what? You have unique talents. Make your site or ebook stand out from the crowd.
I cannot make money at this - If you go in with that attitude, you almost certainly will not make any money. Look over your ideas again. Read more articles. Find something that will work. Make sure you are not betting the farm on the idea, but don't be afraid to do something. One word of caution: don't invest in any MLM programs or other scams. In fact, avoid every program on the web which says you can make money until you've had a chance to learn yourself - virtually all of these programs do not work. Don't waste your time on them.
I'm afraid - Again, I understand. Overcome your fear. Just get started.
People will criticize me - Some criticism is healthy, some is not. I've found it's best to just use the useful comments and ignore the rest. Don't be afraid of criticism.
The internet is dangerous - So is walking to work or driving a car. Don't use this as an excuse.
It's too easy for me - Okay, then it should be simple for you to get started and get something done.
The internet is a fad - Completely false. Certain aspects of the internet certainly are fads, but the internet as a whole is an expanding, growing thing which is certainly here to stay. Besides, who cares if it's a fad? So were pet rocks, and some people made millions off of them.
I'll look stupid - Not getting started on something that needs to be done will make you look stupid. Creating something is intelligent - even if that something is not the best creation. You will learn from your creation and do better each time. So don't worry about it and get started.
I've got to stay anonymous and creating a web site will make me known on the internet - Burying your head in the sand will not make you safe. Hermits are not safe. And I hate to tell you this, but you are almost certainly recorded in a thousand databases even before you get on the internet. Be careful, but don't be paranoid. And don't let this excuse stop you from creating anything.
No on wants my opinions - Wrong. People love to read other people's opinions. Virtually every person on this planet has a story to tell. So tell yours.
No one will read my web site - Wrong. You just have to learn how to promote it. You cannot promote anything that does not exist.
I cannot write - So create graphics.
I don't know how to create graphics - Learn how.
I am a bad writer - You have to write to become a good writer. The only way to write is to start writing.
My teacher in high school said I could never create anything good - Who cares what your teacher in high school said? Anyone who says this deserves a special place in hell. Push this teacher out of your mind and create something.
My friends say it's a waste of time - Are they doing anything useful with their lives? Just start creating.
Any other of the thousands of possible excuses not to do something creative - Ignore the excuses. Just do it.
