Are You a Member of a Networking Group?

"Why should I join my local Chamber of Commerce?" "Ive been invited to the XYZ business networking group. Why should I check them out?" Here are three good reasons: more business going your way, you gain knowledge to help you run your business, and you find other business people who are willing to work with you in a mutually satisfying relationship.
And these three arguments dont even consider one of the best reasons-- the chance to mingle and "talk shop" with other business people in a non-threatening and mutually supporting environment.
Most networking groups bring in experts or have member experts talk on topics that can help you build your business. I have listened to experts at my chamber talk on such topics as the effective use of email, employee management, effective cold calling, and selling to a customer. Several of these talks have given me ideas that have been invaluable in my own business.
I have also met people who have services and products that I didnt even know I needed until I talked with them. One of these has saved me hundreds of dollars in my business. I would never have known about this, if I hadnt met the person at the chamber meeting.
And finally, we come to the magical if overused word, "synergy." Sometimes, especially in business, 2+2 really can equal 5! There are many examples of strategic relationships between businesses: florist, caterer, and wedding planner; office mover and office cleaner; mortician and hit man. You get the idea. Unfortunately, you may not find a strategic fit until you find yourself talking face to face with a perfect match at your next networking meeting!
