MLM - the route to a fortune?

Category: Networking(MLM) Date: 2001-04-13
Now to be honest, I am not a great fan of MLM. Partly because I am old and cynical, and partly because when I was young and innocent (many years ago) I got involved in a Pyramid selling scheme and ended up with crates of engine oil additive in my father's garage, and a large hole in my bank balance!

I have always steered clear of the likes of Amway and Herbal Life, although I do know some people who have made money through them.

Now there are many programmes on the net that offer you vast wealth for doing nothing, and promise an endless, increasing income for life. My general thought is that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is!

With most, if not all of these schemes, there will inevitably be more losers than winners and while a few people will undoubtedly make a good living promoting them, many more will fail.

The main thing to look for with these schemes, is the value of the product/service being offered, the monthly fee you may have to pay in order to participate, and the amount of commission that is being paid out of each payment. If most of a members payments are going out in commission, it does not give the MLM company much cash to invest in whatever the service is that they are offering.

If you feel that there is a value to your monthly payment, which makes that payment a worthwhile investment, then you have nothing to lose by getting involved. If, however, you feel that you are only paying in order to get a large commission from your downline, then I would suggest that you will have to work hard in order to build that downline. If you believe that you are an effective salesperson who is able to put a great deal of time and/or money into promoting such a site, you may make a success of it - but why not put an equal amount of work and effort into promoting something which has a value in its own right?

In the Middle Ages in Europe, alchemists were paid vast sums of money because they claimed to be able to make gold from base metals. Many MLM marketeers are saying the same thing - you can get something out of nothing. Believe me, it just does not work. Why are most of these "Get Rich Quick" schemes usually only advertised in the Free Classifieds and FFA sites? If the advertisers were making so much money themselves, wouldn't they use paid for advertising, which is so much more effective?

My advice is to take your time, visit many web sites and work out which sites, you feel are the successful ones and see who they promote. See which names and products you frequently come across on the sites and in the ezines that you respect.

If you have read all through this article and are still not sure about MLMs I would respectfully suggest that they are not for you. People who will make a success out of MLM schemes, would not have bothered to have read this!

Finally, if you do get involved in a scheme that makes a fortune while you are asleep, please feel free to email me and tell me I was wrong!! (If you have any bad experiences, mail me with your story).
