Market Smarts: Truths and Myths (Part 1)
Category: Newsletters/Newsgroups | Date: 2001-04-04 |
There are several myths (as I call them) pervading the Internet. Here's just a few brief examples. Take a look to determine what is truth, and what is not.
Myth #1 - "Submt any article to newsletters and you'll get published". Wrong. I'm a newsletter editor - not new at all to the game. Been doing this for over 3 yrs. However, the key to success here is *NOT* simply submitting just "any" article.
You have to write your article to be informative, not an outright product seller. (This *really* irritates publishers resulting in the delete key quickly). And, you must hit the right "target market" when you submit the ezines, not just posting to "any and all" ezines out there.
Rick Beneteau's book, "EzineMoney" lets out some real truth about creating articles and how to do it successfully. I reviewed this book for Rick when he first wrote it, and I must say, from an Editor's standpoint, he hits the nail right on the head.
Myth #2 - Anyone can get rich on the 'net. Truth and Myth. Well how can it be both? Truth - if you really are determined, yes, you *can* succeed, no matter what your background or circumstances.
Why do I consider it a myth? Because too many sites dupe you into believing you can slap up a website and the money will roll in. Wrong. It *does* take work (yeah, the four letter word). Not always a lot of work, but definitely a good amount to start with. After all, no one is going to know about you unless *YOU* promote it somehow.
Myth #3 - "Create An Ebook and You'll Get Rich." I like to call this one "Marketing Flubber". I'm sure you've heard if you "just write an ebook on anything, you'll get rich - we'll show you how". Unless you seriously have a niche market, unless you really know *HOW* to market, you aren't going to get rich overnight.
When people purchase an ebook, they want real value - not simply a 10 page ebook with one or two paragraphs each reiterating stuff people can find on other sites free. Please seriously put work into it - and then yes, you can succeed if this is an avenue you want to pursue.
Myth #4 - Biz Opps are the only money makers. Outright Lie. E-commerce is the number Two reason people are on the net (work is #1). But what is selling? PRODUCTS. Books, crafts, clothing, advertising, not just business opportunity guides and get rich quick schemes!
Create something new! Get a niche market, come up with something unique - or even an old product with a new "twist", and you'll be a success. But put together what *you* have a good knowledge of, and ultimately, your *own* product.
Myth #5 - "If I start an ezine, I'll be an instant hit, and I was told I can make $700 in 7 days". Well, without offending, this is a combination of "Marketing flubber" and an outright lie. An ezine *IS* an excellent way of promotion - developing prospects and repeat customers. However, again, it takes that four letter word "work".
You have to constantly promote the ezine. You have to create a "niche". Every Tom, Dick, and Harry has an ezine on "biz opps" or "marketing". (No insults intended on the names!) Is their ezine filled with ads? Does their ezine include articles from other writers, or are they unique - written by them, and informative?
Give people a reason to stick around, but don't assume (or be duped) into thinking your ezine will hit thousands of subscribers overnight...unless you add them without their permission of course, which is, a no-no.
Seriously consider the above "myths", concentrate on your success, and research. And that, is how you can be "Market Smart".
