You Need More Than Just a Sales Page And a Website To Sell On The Internet

Category: Online Promotion Date: 2001-03-22
Everybody wants to make money on the internet--and of course that includes you.

So you're ready. Or so you think.

You've taken the first steps.

Step 1: You've found the right product to sell.

Step 2: You've written your sales letter.

Step 3: You have you website up with sales letter in place.

Step 4: Your order page is ready . . .

Then you sit back and wait and wait . . . for the orders to come rolling in.

But oops, there's one problem!

Your website visitor is not there to purchase a product at all.

That's right. READ IT AGAIN!

Your website visitor is not coming to your website to purchase a product with credit card in hand.

So what happens when they see the sales letter?

LIGHTS WHIRR. SIRENS FLASH. AND . . . click

It's on to another website.

Not exactly the result you want!

WHAT HAPPENED?

Let's step back for a moment and take a look.

What's the number one reason people get on the internet in the first place?

Usually to find information.

There's so much free information on so many topics on the internet. You don't need to go to the encyclopedia anymore. You don't even need to visit the library.

There's a huge mega-library on the internet. And it's accessed by using a search engine.

If all you have to offer is a sales letter and your order page, forget it! That's not why your website visitor is there for!

They want free information. And if you don't have it, they'll go somewhere else, pure and simple.

What can you do to provide this information and immediately increase your site's traffic (and increase orders as well)?

1. Add free tips and articles to your site on topics related to your product. For example, if you are selling a book about gardening, include a section on your site offering free gardening tips. This also sets you up as an expert in this field and shows that you know your subject matter.

2. Seek to exchange links or advertise on other sites that relate to what you're selling. With the gardening book, contact site owners who sell gardening tools or supplies. Or even similar gardening books.

3. Post helpful information on newsgroups relating to your product (gardening newsgroups and forums in this case). But don't try to sell the product in these newsgroups (this is a big turn-off for some who visit the newsgroups--you've got it--just to get free information!). Just offer free information or answer questions and of course offer a link to your site where they can find more.

4. Write articles relating to your product and to your site (in this instance, articles about gardening). Place the articles on your site, offer them for free reprint, and send the articles out to other site owners who publish ezines (in this example--ezines about gardening).

5. Publish your own ezine on the topic (in this case gardening) and start building your subscriber list. Then you can market your book (in this case your gardening book) to those on your list. And of course, you can also advertise other products or services (or even books) to this email list you are building.
