Laughter, the "Jest" Medicine

Organization, creativity and a willingness to do what it takes to get the job done are all admirable qualities, highly prized in todays business world. But before you let all the seriousness take over - dont forget to slip some humor into your briefcase each morning.
In a recent survey of 737 CEOs, over 98% of them indicated they would much rather hire somebody with a good sense of humor than somebody without one. And you can bet those CEOs want to keep those same people on the payroll.
It makes sense. Positive humor (not the kind some people use to cover up mean-spiritedness) can reduce stress, increase productivity and improve ones attitude. What employer or self-employed business owner wouldnt want a few laughs to lighten up the day? Having a sense of humor is a big part of peoples personalities and can play a powerful role in balancing negative emotions, such as fear and frustration.
A good guffaw relaxes muscles, lowers blood pressure, and may reduce levels of hormones that create stress and suppress immunity. According to William F. Fry, a psychiatrist associated with Stanford University, laughter also stimulates the production of hormones called catecholamines, which are thought to cause the brain to release endorphins - the same stress-reducers triggered by exercise!
While some modern conveniences, such as computers, fax machines and cell phones can help relieve some workplace stress by simplifying tasks, they cant react to humorous events and stories. They may be able to "tell" a joke, but they certainly lack the facial poses and hand gestures often all-important to a winning rib-tickler.
People who laugh often and heartily are better adjusted, healthier and a whole lot more fun to be around. Dusting off your sense of humor is one of the best things you can do to help yourself cope in todays uneasy, ever-changing world.
Now, before you get back to the crusty side of life, check out what it takes to earn a Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate Degree in Humorology (no, this is not a joke!) Humor University at http://www.humoru.com offers training for humor in the workplace and life in general which they promise will help improve teamwork and morale or the jokes on them!
