Why we need to communicate effectively

Communication is a very important part in our lives. We communicate every day - for example we order a sandwich: "Multigrain bread please, no butter, cheese, sun dried tomatoes and tuna please, with a dash of pepper". There you go, not hard at all and the person with whom we are communicating knows exactly what we want or asks questions to clarify our request: "Would you like Cheddar cheese or rather Mozzarella?" Good question as there are lots of different cheeses!
Well, you say, what is so important about ordering my sandwich? I do that every day, lots of people do it daily So what is special about it?
It's a good example to show us how important communication is to each and every one of us.
We are all part of a social net and interact with people daily. To communicate is very important in order to establish and secure our standing with those we communicate.
Who am I?
What do I want?
What do I know?
What can I do?
Whenever we're looking for a job we have to communicate our abilities and very often we won't have the chance to demonstrate them but we have to communicate them verbally. A high percentage of our communication occurs through words and we need to be good with them to optimize the chances of being successfully understood.
We can criticise, compliment, clarify very effectively with the right choice of words.
Lack of communication can cause severe problems for your work, your relationship and for yourself personally. If you do not or cannot communicate effectively you may actually be doing yourself severe long term harm. It is imperative that you can clearly make yourself understood and can understand those around you with whom you interact just as clearly.
If there is a problem you have to address it - put it in words - say that you don't want Cheddar if you want Mozzarella, but use your words wisely. It's very easy to hurt with words and they can heal as well. So be careful as
they are quite a powerful commodity.
Think about what you want to say and what do you want to achieve with your words. Don't ask for Tuna if you don't like fish. You also have to consider how your message comes across. Will your communication partner understand what you are saying? Are you giving all the necessary information? Are you delivering the message at the right wave length so
it can be adequately and accurately received?
By now you may be asking yourself: Yes Alexandra, and??? My point is that we need to educate ourselves in the usage of words and how we convey them.
Reading is a very good way to expand ones vocabulary. Choose quality reading material which will stimulate you mentally because it interests you. Complicated Philosophy books will not necessarily help if you aren't interested in discussing philosophy.
You must also be patient and very open as communicating is a two way road and if you simply assume everyone understands you because you do then you may be in for a surprise. Not everyone thinks like you. Similarly you don't think like everyone else thus making us all very unique. Effective communication involves understanding where the other party is coming from. Look, listen and then adjust your delivery to make your communication as effective as it can be.
Writing will make the words flow more easily. You don't need to write books or stories. Putting your thoughts and plans as well as your joys and your frustrations on paper will not only make them more expressible you will also see things a little more clearly and this will assist you in reaching your goals and solving your problems.
Communication is a wonderful ability and we need to make the most of it to achieve that which is ultimately important to us.
