Publishing in the Aftermath of Terror

In wake of the recent events in New York City, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania in the United States, I felt it was very important to talk to you today about the power of our publications.

While your list may still be small, you will discover that you also have a lot of power with a small number of people. With larger publications, you can influence the actions and the behavior of thousands of people.

As a publisher, I maintain subscriptions to several article announcement lists, so I am on the forefront on new web content as it is being distributed to publishers world wide.

While I might share in the shock, anger and outrage against the terrorists who brought this series of events to life, I cannot share in the hate-mongering that is taking place in its wake.

Just as the owner of Huffman Aviation in Florida soon realized after making his initial comments to the press, our emotions are running high, and while our emotions are in the driver's seat, we can say things that we might regret later. In his original comments, he suggested that he would not permit any Arab's to attend his school in the future. Hours later, he was apologizing, having realized that he was condemning a whole race based on the acts of a very few.

Arab's, Moslems and people who look Arabian around the world are being punished and terrorized based on the color of their skin or their choice of religion.

Illinois Gov. George Ryan said,

"The terrorists who committed these horrible acts would like nothing better than to see us
tear at the fiber of our democracy and to trample on the rights of other Americans."

People who are friends of both America and Israel are having to hide and to keep a wary glance over their shoulders at all times, because backlashes against Arab's and Moslems are happening all too frequently in all parts of the world.

It is at times like these, more so than any other, that we need all of the friends we can get. We don't want our friends cowering in fear because we are so short-sighted as to believe that the color of someone's skin is enough of a barometer to judge someone friend or foe.

For every innocent attacked, we are breeding the possibility of gaining a whole slew of enemies from people who once considered us friends.

In the coming weeks and months, we publishers can have exceptional power over our readers. We can work them into a frenzy of hate, or we can guide them to channel their anger to search out our real enemies instead.

Many authors that I have always had the highest regard for, have taken the low road in the aftermath, in some instances even calling for open hatred against the innocents.

Over the next few weeks, as you sit down to write notes to your readers, and as you comb through the various free reprint articles that are available for publication in your ezines and on your websites, take great care to remember my words.

Take great care and concern for what you deliver to your subscribers. Emotion driven hate is never good for business. We have devoted much time and effort to our ezines over the past months and past years to build our reputations with our readers and our advertisers. To stop doing the things that you have always done, to get down into the trenches and to call for hate --- whether in your own words or the words of your guest authors --- will only serve to destroy your ezine as it destroys you.

By jumping into the trenches of hate, one could rightly believe that you are jumping into the same shoes as the terrorists who have brought us this obscene chain of events.

I know and you know that you are a far better person than the people who brought us this most terrible day. Make certain that your ezine continues to represent that distinction as we move into the future.
