Keywords, Where do you put em

Category: Search Engines - Keywords Date: 2003-06-12
Youve spent a lot of time choosing the right keywords for each page of your site. Youve gone to various search engines & searched for these keywords to see what your competition used, & have gone that one crucial step further by using WordTracker
http://our.affiliatetracking.net/wordtracker/af.cgi?21

Now you have some highly effective, well-used keywords that are sure to increase your traffic. Where do you put those darn keywords? Cant you just slap up a few META tags containing your keywords and be done with it?

NOPE... Not hardly!

When a search engine visits your site, its looking at the "inside view" of the page, not the fancy and well-designed website that your viewers see. Search engines couldnt care less what you use. Instead, the engines see the source code, or HTML, of your pages. (Hyper Text Markup Links)

Want too SEE what the engines see? Then open your browser and go to any web page. Netscape, click on View, then Page Source. Internet Explorer, click on View, then Source.

Youre now viewing the skeleton of the page, which well call the source code. (Just close it when done, DONT SAVE IT)

When an engine visits your site, it sees this HTML source code. The searh engines consider anything toward the top of the page to be more important than further down on the page.

So, the head section of your web page, which is at the very top of he page, is extremely important as well as the fact that the title tag and META description tag are used in the search results for most engines.

Be sure to place your keywords toward the top of the page, in the beginning of your keyword tags, and in the beginning of your body text.

Many other factors come into play here too. Relevancy, including the keyword weight, (the number of times the keyword appears) How popular the website link popularity, How frequently the keywords are used etc... For this article, ill concentrate on where we can place our all-important keywords.

Every engine has a different ranking algorithm, which simply means that they each consider different things important or not important when determining relevancy and ranking. What works for one engine wont necessarily work for another. Search engines like simplicity!

Youll have better success with your web page if youre not utilizing techniques like frames, JavaScript, dynamic pages, graphic-intense pages, Because Search engines like simplicity!

Fine tune each page with one or two keyword phrases and youll be much more successful. Also, things change so fast in this industry, which means that what works today may not work tomorrow. Conducting a weekly Keyword Search is a really good idea.

Places where you should include your Keywords Note: All META tags go in the head /head section of your page.

*KEYWORDS* in the Title Tag TITLE Example:
TITLEWordtracker Find Top Rated Search Engine Keywords/TITLE

*KEYWORDS* in the meta tag
Example:
meta name="description" content=" Wordtracker lets you find top rated Search Engine keywords for your meta tags and its just plain easy!"

*KEYWORDS* in the Keywords tag
Example:
meta name="keywords" content="find keywords, search engines, meta tags, wordtracker report"

Remember, just sticking in a bunch of keywords in the keyword META tag won t get your page ranked high for all of those keywords. In order to get a top ranking with a keyword phrase, you have to use that phrase throughout your page, in your title tag, and in other tags as well.

*KEYWORDS* in the link text
Example:
A HREF=http://yourwebsite.com/keyword-phrases.html "Click here for more keywords than you can imagine."/A

When you put your keyword phrases in your URLs, be sure to separate those phrases with a - or a _ Try not to run keywords together. Break the words up, and the search engines will see them as individual words in a phrase. If the words are not broken up, the spiders see the words as a single term.

Example:
top-500-keywords.html
top500keywords.html

Keywords in the body text

Remember the importance of placing your keyword phrase early in the body text of the page.

Also, some search engines retrieve the first few lines of your webpage and utilize them as the description of your site in the search results, be sure to put a number of important keywords in
the first few lines of your introductory text. Try to craft the beginning text so that it is appropriate to be used as a description of your site.

Make the first 25 words in the body of your page keyword enhanced. Begin your page with text, not an image. The engines cant "read" images, though many engines can read ALT tags for those images.

Spread your keyword phrases throughout the body of the page in natural sounding paragraphs. Put a keyword at the end of your body text as well.

Try putting your keyword phrases in bold in your body text. Sometimes this boosts the relevancy.

Take the time to do this correctly and ill wager your website will be closer to the top the next time the search engine spiders "Visit" your site.
