10 brilliant ways to optimise your potential in any situation

Category: Top 10 Tips Date: 2002-05-29
There are a ton of quality ways how one can maximise their performance. If you can master the ten principles in this article then you will be well and truly on your way to achieving what really is most important to you.

1) CONDUCT A FEASIBILITY STUDY BEFORE YOU EMBARK ON ANY VENTURE

It is vital before you undertake anything that you ascertain what the pros and cons are. This may seem rather simple and straight forward but the five basics:

a) Who am I doing this for? Who is my target audience?

b) Why do I need/want to do this? Am I going to benefit?

c) What do I expect to achieve by undertaking this? What will I be presenting? What is my goal here???

d) Where can I best present my offerings? Where can I reach my target and achieve my goal?

e) When can I get the best results? When should I start? Answer: Now!!!

2) DISCOVER YOUR INTERESTS AND PURSUE THOSE:

Have you ever noticed the different results between doing something you enjoy and something you believe you should be doing? It is humongous!!!

If you want to do your best it is mandatory that you do something that you enjoy. Quite simply if you dont enjoy what you do absolute then you cant possibly do your best.

I have seen it too often where individuals take the first job they find and stay there forever as it provides some form of sustenance. Sure this is fine but it is only a band aid. You need to prevent the illness rather than cover it up. Prevention is operative here as you will do this from the outset if you choose to pursue something your interested in.

Follow your heart more than your in-built security mechanism. This way you are paving your way for long term success.

3) EXAMINE YOUR NEEDS:

Performing at your best involves a total understanding of what it is youre about.

Id suggest as per number two find an interest but also expand this to encompass your needs. We all have basic needs of eating, sleeping, wanting a roof over our heads. In other words we have an in-built mechanism which caters to our survival. This is the most important aspect of our needs in that they need to filled on a regular basis - daily in fact when using those just mentioned.

You may have other needs too such as fitness, kids to care for, house to attend to or an array of other things. You need to climb the nearest tree, look at the view from all angles before drawing your plan of attack.

This optimises your resources when you have a better idea at where youre starting from.

4) CAPTURE YOUR IDEAS ON PAPER:

Did you know that 95% of your solution is attained in getting a pen and paper and writing things down. A highly respect author, Dr Bill Hill advised me this in one of his colossal books on privacy. Its so simple. Its so easy. Its so right yet only a small number of people do this.

In an earlier article I mentioned how beneficial I found it to keep a pen and a pocket note pad in my top pocket as when something came to me such as any idea I could expect to record it. If you dont you lose it and may never recoup it.

A good friend of mine was a mining engineer who relied almost entirely on memory and rarely made the effort to write anything down. He may have been in the pub, watching television or on his way to bed. Of course most of his ideas never got started. He was a brilliant engineer who handicapped himself needlessly by not maximising his available resources.

It only takes one idea to move a mountain. Your next idea could be the earthmover. Make sure you capture it!!!

5) REMOVE STRESS & DISTRACTIONS FROM EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL (AND PERSONAL) LIFE!!!

We all suffer some form of stress so its probably unfair to suggest we can eliminate it all. In fact some people even thrive on some form of stress so this needs to be very well qualified.

You need to remove all forms of negative energy from your life. You cant optimise any situation when youre walking about with a knot in your stomach twice the size of Canada. This is death before commencement. Positive stress (I prefer to call this adrenalin) can inhibit your work and you go right ahead. Make sure excitement, butterflies and anxiety do not become too much otherwise they will be counter-productive.

Stress for me is a four lettered word. I detest it with a vengeance and will do what I have to do to make my situation conducive only to positive forces. Stress sucks to the max. Do not get absolved by this dangerous parasite. If you are stressed then you must ascertain the source and go about a solution. Do not get further stressed by the fact that you are stressed otherwise you have commenced a vicious spiral which goes only one way... downwards!!!!!!!

On the other hand if you have distractions about such as kids, other family members or the telephone ringing with your other business or whatever you need to plan your time efficiently so that someone else is caring for the young ones or answering the phone so that you may do the things that you wish to achieve. Make sure you do or you are beaten before step one arrives.

6) ATTAIN & MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE, IMAGE & OUTLOOK!!!

Just expanding on the previous point a little further stress is one thing but an extension of eliminating stress is, without a doubt the ability to be positive and turn any situation into a plus for yourself.

A positive attitude is more than saying everything will work out for you. It involves a special prowess which can turn things in your favour. It makes you more persistent. It makes you more self confident. It can give you the edge over your competition, or make your overall state of well being more to your liking. It can make you a stronger person!!!

A positive attitude is a state of mind which can only work for you. Harness this power and you will visibly see how you can make the most of your situation almost at an instant.

7) HAVE ONLY YOUR GOAL IN FOCUS AT ALL TIMES!!!

This part can be related to that earlier on distractions. The more you focus the more likely you are to bring home the bacon.

Every distraction can be equated to a procrastination. The end result is the same - nothing!!! With a well thought out plan you will be able to focus more upon the goal due to its importance to you. However if you have jumped in without understanding and realising the importance of what you are doing then there is little chance that you will do your best to make it happen.

Make your plan important before you try to make it stick. If it is important you will, maybe subconsciously, but you will definitely be doing it - heading in the direction to achieve!!!

8) UTILISE YOUR NETWORK:

If you subscribe to Nancy Roebkes ProfNet ezine you would have a really good idea how her faith and belief in Network Marketing has made her a renowned business person in her field. This is dynamic. She has grasped this principle so well and has reaped the benefits which she so richly deserves.

We can all do with as much help and support as we can get along the way. Make sure you give more than you get as this way youll be increasing your chances of getting support readily available when you want or need it.

The advantages of utilising your network are to expand your contacts both as colleagues and potential clients and to increase general awareness to your offerings. I think its fair to say that we can all do with more of those.

9) TAKE NECESSARY TIME OUTS:

It is widely understood for anyone to achieve something important such as a steady client base, own business or personal milestones a lot of work needs to be expended.

This may well be true but we are all human and become run down if we dont give our body the necessary fuel it deserves. If you dont put any petrol in your car eventually it will stop running. We need a good balanced diet with regular exercise and a work release such as a social life. Everything in balance and moderation.

Taking time away gives your body and mind a chance to recuperate so you can continue working effectively and efficiently. As time progresses it also develops a trait which can be a powerful tool when used correctly, that of your creative sub-conscious. This is where your mind ticks over in rest mode without pressure and sometimes you may even wake up with the idea you were searching for and potentially have exactly what it is you were looking for simply because you took time out to look after yourself.

10) REVIEW REGULARLY!!!

Most importantly - did you get closer to your goal during the last week? If so expand on what you did. Make it work more for you than before. If not alter your plans. You dont want to be spending time where no positive results are being achieved.

Of course you cant be hasty in changing things too quickly either. What Im saying is to keep a close eye on what youre doing and tweak your plans as required.

If you keep on top of your goal plan and adapt the above 10 steps to your own situation then youll be well and truly on the way to "Optimising Your Potential" and realising those things in your life that are really important to you.

Think Successfully.
