It Is All About Traffic

Category: Traffic and Tracking Date: 2003-06-04
There are so many aspects to marketing on the web. One fact is for sure: It is all about traffic. Building traffic and keeping traffic.

To profit on the internet, you *need* traffic to your web site. And the best way to generate traffic is to advertise!

The problem, of course, is that advertising can be very expensive. Advertising on the big search engines can cost an arm and a leg. Small and medium sized businesses are effectively shut out of this market!

It is a jungle out there, and the big animals have a huge advantage over the little creatures. Getting noticed in the World Wild Web demands a little team work!

That is why everyone can benefit by joining a "banner advertising exchange network". Banner advertising exchange networks are a great way to get some free advertising, and start driving traffic to your website.

The idea is simple: You place banner ads on your page, and in return, other people will place banner ads on their pages. The key of course, is to find a good organization to help you do this.

It would be impossibly time consuming for you to have to contact hundreds of websites and offer each of them an exchange of advertising. The best way of course is to find a reputable "Banner Exchange" service to manage all this for you. This way, you can start taking advantage of free advertising right away.

Most banner exchanges will offer you a 2:1 ratio for visitors. This means that every time a person visits your website, the banner exchange service delivers one ad to your page - that is called an "impression". You earn one credit for every two ads served to your page (every two "impressions"). Every credit earns you one free ad (impression) on someone elses page.

All you have to do is edit your web pages to include a block of HTML code (you can usually just copy and paste it from their site), and for every two visitors to your web site, they will deliver your banner once, out to another members site. Anyone viewing your banner may click on it and visit your site. That means free advertising for you!

The question then becomes, where on my site should I put this banner code? First off, you want it in a high traffic web page, which for most of us is our home page or index page - the first page all visitors enter our site from. The higher the traffic, the more free ads you can earn through the banner exchange service.

But, should you put the ad on the top of the page??? Well, this is probably not the best idea. You can earn the same amount of credits by placing the ad at the bottom of your page, or half way down. It is up to you.

Do we set up a separate page, just for banners? Possibly, but keep this in mind: you want to generate as much traffic as possible. This way you can earn the most credits as possible. Dont put the banners on some obscure page that never gets any traffic. So a separate page probably wont earn you a lot of credits.

Here is a suggestion. Open your web browser, and look at your home page. Notice how much fits in one screen, without having to scroll down. You will want to place your banner exchange banner, just below a full screen of data, so viewers will see the banner only if they scroll down.

The reason for this is:

1) Most banner exchanges call their own site to find a banner to place on your site. This means that the banner exchange banners will load on your page slower than graphics stored on your own server.

2) The banner exchange banner will be loading, while your visitor looks at the top of your web page and it will be fully loaded by the time your visitor scrolls down the page. No waiting for your visitor to see the banner.

If you join more than one banner exchange, and we recommend you do, you should place them near the bottom of your home page. You dont want to lose your visitors too soon.

There is a complete list of banner exchanges you may want to join: http://www.markwelch.com/bannerad/baf_exchange.htm

What ever type of marketing you pursue, banner exchanges are one effective way to drive visitors to your web site.

Note: For small websites which generate only a limited amount of traffic, a plain old banner exchange service may not be of much help. If your site gets only 100 visitors per week, you will only earn 50 free ads per week. That is only worth a few cents.

Better than nothing, but it isnt going to get the crowds rushing to your website. That is why there has been so much excitement about a new service on the internet called the LinkMedia Free Exchange.

It is just like the other banner exchange services, but there is a little twist! Every week, we pick one name from our list of members and award a massive amount of free advertising. The current jackpot prize is 15,000 free ads (called "impressions"). That is at least $150 worth of free advertising.

So, you get all the benefits of a regular banner exchange, plus you have a chance to win lots more free advertising every week. A very cool idea:
